Just farting around in the garage, thought I'd post up some practice welds since there's a chance there's someone on here who actually knows what the hell they're doing.

Ohhh bubble gum! haha.. Now I've never welded myself but Ralph was once explaining it to me.. I think that when there's all that spatter there's to much temp. Either that or adjust your mix there?? I dunno honestly.. I'm just bored. haha.. looks fun though. Someday I will try myself.

I'm pretty sure the splatters from me running it waaaaay too hot, but it was fun watching it glow for 10 seconds (bright red) after welding it, haha

haha thought so.. yeah that's a lot of glowing. :) it's cool putting on a mask watching someone do some perty welds.

Are you using flux core wire? That will always make a lot of splatter. Otherwise it looks real good. I remember the first boogers that I made. Just keep practicing different positions. Tip if you are going to weld on the bottom side turn your wire speed up. That is something I wish someone would have told me so I thought I would pass it along.

Spatter with good penetration is better than no spatter and inadequate penetration. BURN BABY BURN! You didn't burn through it, so no foul.

Spatter can be ground off or if you use spray spitter-spatter, brushed away.

I shoulda picked up one of those welders, they are priced right at tractor supply. My mig is a lincoln sp175 plus. Its a good machine but I do have a few complaints about it. I never used one of those there but my money is on it being a better bargain.

Some suggestions, run Co2. Much cheaper than tri-mix and not as finiky if the metal isnt real clean. Flux core wire if its real thick metal your welding and/or dirty.

Decided to start practice welding on an old 35C from a YJ I had laying around.

But in light of the weather (lots of rain lately) I decided to cut a chunk of the axle out and practice inside.

I was surprised to find that the axle tube was 5/16” thick, that’s ¼” stock next to it for comparison. I was under the impression that axle tubes were just under ¼”

I’ll be welding on shock tabes from www.bluetorchfab.com soon, so I bought 2 extra’s to practice with before doing them on the axle that’s under my Jeep.

Decided to test the weld by beating the crap out of it.

Bent it back and fourth 4 times, couldn’t get the weld to give. Sweet.

Speaking of welds, I’m nervous that one of the welds holding my claytons truss to my rear 44 might be cracking. It could just be the paint, but I’m not sure. Whatchya think?

I'm gonna grind the paint off soon, see what it looks like under there. Welds looked good when Mark did them last June, and that's what makes me nervous is that the paints cracking at the edge of the weld, I'm afraid it's being stressed or somethin'

could always run a second pass over it...and as for taking the paint off...dont grind it. use a wire wheel in a drill so you dont take any of the material away. if you grind you could smooth over the crack, if thats what it is. although it could just be slag or some other impurity that wasn't cleaned off before the painting process...
