im curious if anyone has, or knows anyone with the equipment to turn down a piece of solid steel stock to a certain diameter for me. this is going to be the hinge pivot on my swing-a-way spare tire carrier. similar to the warn design, i need to have the piece of solid stock (hinge spindle) machined to a close tolerance to fit inside a piece of structural tubing which will be capped and set on top of the spindle. if you, or anyone you know can help me w/ this...please let me know.

the finish product will be somewhere around 1 3/4" in diameter and around 4" long, with a step at the bottom for the tubing to rest on. im sure this will make for an interesting write up once im finished...pix are sure to follow...

thanks,

-steve

I've got a buddy with a lathe in his garage here in Bethel.

Gimme the specs on the starting size of the stock and what you want it turned down to and i'll see if he wants to do it.

ok...starting size of the stock is 2" outisde diameter. size of the tubing the barstock will be fitting in is 2" outside diameter, seeing as how its d.o.m., that would mean he will be turning about 3/16" off the barstock. the lenghth of the lathe pass will be in the neighborhood of 3" to 4".

I just got off the phone with him, he can do it.

I'll give him your number or something. What were you thinking $$ wise?

i dunno...30 bux or somethin? its not like its that complicated. i got a quote at a machine shop in warrendale. they said 56, but that was including the stock...i paid just over 20 for my stock.

A'ight.

I'll let him know. He was on his way to the Poverty Neck concert so we had to cut it short. I'll talk to him tomorrow and give him your number and you guys can discuss what exactly you want done.

Steve - there's a couple of places out this way (still doing work out at the Mills?)

You could try Wolfe Metal Fab in New Kensington. Talk to Kevin and tell him what you are looking for. I use them for fab work related to my business (non 4x4). Their number is 724-339-7790.

I'll run it up there if you can't get there during normal business hours - you have to drop it at my house though...

damn...wish it was last week. no more mills...woo hoo. im outta the mall. its opening within the next 2 weeks. make sure you go stomp on the 4500 sq. ft. of hardwood floor i glued down in lucky strike aka the bowling alley. and then go wing a few balls down the 6 weeks of labor i put in on the 20 lanes. btw...did you get your hydraulic lines done up at napa?

Cebby

Not at Napa. I found out there is a hydraulic shop right here in Oakmont (about 3 blocks from my house - Liberty Hose) They were great to work with and exchanged parts for me until I got my act together. Did you see the vid of that puppy running. I'm really pumped - gotta get some tube to bend!
