JD2 model 3 bender from Trick Tools $300

OTC 14 inch spring return ram from Florida Hydraulics $200
(This is the ram that comes with the JD2 hydro conversion)

JD2 ram mount from Trick Tools $90

Used hydraulic power unit from a 9k auto lift from Jake the Carney $50
(has motor, pump, resevoir, valve block all in one unit)

Hose with quick disconnect from Myzak Hydraulic in Canonsburg $62

Grounded plug for power unit $7

1 3/4 die borrowed from Cebby but I will buy one, eventually.

I wanted a bender similar to the Model 3 with the hydro kit which costs $1614.00 plus the price of the bender but I did not want to spend a total of $2000 with shipping/tax/etc and still not have any dies.

http://www.vansantent.com/model_3_bender.htm (http://www.vansantent.com/model_3_bender.htm)

So I sourced the parts my self and MF Steve and I put it together in about an hour. We have it working and will use it to build its own stand which will include a mounted laptop for Bendtech.

I think we're probably best off mounting in the horizontal plane. I just read a few threads on other forums about people having issues with bending main hoops, etc. with their benders in the vertical position.

Kids using what they got from Santa.... Very cool bender, let us know how it works out.
Wonder what the learning curve is ? I mean, how much tube is going in the junk pile ?

Kids? It isn't rocket science. Specialty tube bending software helps too. There won't be any waste here. Plenty of experience, just a new machine, not a loaner this time.

No joke there! Any bigger than what we got and the rent seems to go up in multiples of 4 though!

Damn off-topic! I'm ready to go fire this thing up and make its stand whenever Dave is ready. Somehow I'm not hurtin after killing near a half gallon of Jack last night.

After rewiring it for 110v, it works great. It is a little too fast so I will put a restricter in the line somewhere.

We had a piece of 1.75 .120 dom wall break while bending today. It was not binding and it broke all the way around, leaving a knife-like edge around the break. It did not hurt the bender or dies. Anyone witnessed a similar occurrence?

I figured I'd give my truck some time to warm up being that it's 4* outside. So, I went out and started it, came back in and welded everything up. I might go down tomorrow depending on how fawkin cold it is (I don't wanna wait for it to warm up in there,) and finish up the pump mount, maybe a 4 gang electric box and some wheels/casters. Ryan has the pix.

No - but how cold was the tube? I'll bet that had something to do with it.

Thats about all we could come up with. It is pretty wild...the pictures will show. It's almost an even break all the way around the circumference of the tube. Where it split, the edge is almost like a male and female beveled edge.

Oddly enough, there was no damage to the tube before the bend, and no visible damage other than the break afterwards. Although, after that, we gave another bend a shot, which came out great, and one more of the same following that. No problem at all, and all the parts were manufactured from the same length of tubing. Weird...

wow, nice break.

Yeah, I was afraid we had made a tubing breaker instead of a tubing bender. The tube was really cold and before we figured out that the power unit was wired internally for 220 but we had a 110 plug on it, we were bending it a little bit and letting it pop back. I think it was fatigue plus cold plus a relatively tight bend. Either way, it worked fine after that.

Where are you mounting the powerpack??

I'm sure you had already thought of this, but you might want to think about vertically at the end opposite the die (if you have the height available). You need something heavy over there to offset the weight of the arms/die AND tube weight so it doesn't get tippy on you. Die storage on that end could help too.

I think sence it was so cold in there it was brittle or something? I showed a few people the pictures and they had the same reaction we had.

Motor/pump/reservior must be mounted vertically. There is a pickup tube in there. Its going to be mounted inside the rear-most hoop. Expanded metal down below for storage of dies, etc. The height of the stand with no wheels is about 40" to the die, which is comfortable. Leaning over sucks! We always have Daves awful 5-gallon bucket of WHEEL WEIGHTS to put down there if needed. Cmon man, you know I'll come up with something insane!

That is DoubleZJ's jeep. Dave is trying to figure out WTF is going on w/ the front end vibrations, etc.

So far, everyone is trying to blame the tube manufacturer. Assuming its made in China, where it is not. This is Canadian made DOM.

That's a shame. At least it will ride smooth... :)

I was wondering how I was going to fit mine in there for the 3" IRO springs, Bils, discos, and some custom schtuff B4 the end of the month.

well there better not be an IFS going in my WJ or we're gonna have a problem. I kinda like my solid axle :-P

that break is ridiculous...never seen DOM pull apart like that....did you have any kind of lube on the dies?? i'd say some sort of inclusion in the steel, slag inclusion in melting...

also why use DOM for a stand?? little pricey for something like a bender stand...or am i mistaken on what that piece was for....??

anywho, where'd you get the tube?? around here or mail order...if it was local i'd be back at the supplier in a heartbeat...wat if that tube was in a drag car rolling down the strip at 200+ or coverin a kid's head in a buggy flop.... :087:

and that bender is fast!! haha too fast for bending cold steel...the more i think about it the more i think that caused it...a little bind and the outter die kept haulin ass... i dunno good to see you guys built it and not apend $879252894632498 on a bender:023:

We had it lubed well with white lithium grease. I think Steve is taking the broken piece back to the supplier (Fieldcrest in Carnegie) so they are aware of what happened.

We used the DOM because we had a partial stick that was enough and we wanted to start on it right away.

The bender is fast. I think I am going to add a fitting with a fluid restrictor to try and slow it down. It works fine as it is, though.

are you using any type of lube? i use bending lube but you can also use bearing grease and apply it with a paint brush.
