ive got a 1989 yj amc 2.5 i4 TBI that i have changed twice and the same piston has detonated twice in two different engines and i have a limited amount of money ive found a 1986 or 87 amc 4.2 i6 carb. and transmission with everything i need to change it over, i know the transfer case will not work because the chunk is on the drivers side of my yj and the front d-shaft on the cj is on the passenger side, is it possible to change the transfer case or will it hurt it to leave the front drive shaft out until i can afford to overhaul everything to something else?

First find out what trans it is, then figure out if it will work with the one you have. If not your looking into adapting

You can run it with the front drive shaft removed and "free wheel" the front for the time being if you're REALLY hell's bent on running the 4.2L and trans from the CJ.

It would be simpler to find a complete running 2.5L drivetrain to swap in rather than trying to adapt the CJ straight 6. Lots of things will have to change to get that six in place of the TBI 2.5L

Radiator and all hoses
Transfer case (possibly transmission if you can't adapt)
Transmission mounts & clutch assembly
Motor mounts (the frame horns and the mounts themselves)
Exhaust
