Go to your picture in Photobucket. On the right side of the screen you will see a gray box with "Image link code" at the top. Copy the text in the field labeled "IMG Code". It is the text that starts with [IMG]. Paste that in your message, don't worry about the "mountain with the sun" button.

The XJ is looking good. I like the functionality of front and rear hitches. Sometimes I wish I had gone that route with the FJ.

Whats the idea behind the NSS over ride, I can see it for a manual but, an auto???

aquaholic
03-04-2009, 05:51 PM
well, the idea was to just get the stupid thing to start. the switch actually keeps the jeep from starting when its not in park or neutral. doesn't matter if its a stick or an automatic. apparently the nss's on these are pretty troublesome especially in cold weather (at least from the 20 or so threads that i've read on naxja) and mine was no different. the grease inside gets hard and the little springs inside cant make enough pressure to make them contact through so the thing will start. once it warms up i'll just remove the nss and clean it out and regrease it. but the override switch was way more appealing since it only took 1/2 hour to install. all it does is fake the pcm into thinking the heaps in park. thats it. heres a few of the more useful posts that i've found on the subject. one was started by me to find the actual wire that i needed to ground.

those are the lifted pics steve. pretty sad huh. it was just a baby 2" lift. spacers in the front and shackles in the rear. tires are getting bought next week (hopefully on monday) as well as an aussie rear locker. i'm gonna go with 30x9.50x15 hankook mt's all around. i bought a 32" set for the FJ last month and i really like them.

AHH OK, it was a stop gap fix till it gets warm. Actually on a manual trans it makes sense to trick the NSS into thinking it's in neutral, you can then use the starter to move the vehicle if you had too (a really old school wheelers trick). That's what I thought you were trying to do.

I've had my NSS off and torn down a few times in the past few years, GoJeep (the Aussy Jeep guy) has the best, easiest to follow write up on removing, cleaning and repairing the AW4 NSS.

I have a bunch of RE 4.5" lift parts if you want to throw a kit together cheap. Need some bushings, etc, but otherwise complete. Front LCA's, coils, adj. track bar, rear leaves. You'd need bumpstops, degree shims, and the drop brackets for the front suspension setup. PM if interested.

Looks good....but is that a TC drop I see under there?

And as far as the NSS goes, it doesnt matter if its cold or warm out, once it starts giving you problems, they'll continue. You might get away with cleaning it up, but when I went to clean mine the whole plastic housing fell apart when I was taking it off the trans. For me, it was just easier to pony up the 100some bucks and get a new one.

If your having issues with it now, I would try taking it off now and either clean it out or get a new one. The longer I waited to tend to mine the worse and worse it got when I had to start it.

Looks like a good start. When I got my XJ in 03 I cleaned the NSS which was barely working at all. It was horrible. Took 5 or 10 minutes to find the sweet spot to start sometimes. Anyways, cleaned it 5 or 6 years ago and it's still working fine.

do you have the d35 rear end? i can' tell, kinda looks flat like the 8.25. you should upgrade to the 29 spline, then lock it!

i definately has the 8.25 trailblaze which i believe is already the 29 spline. hey steve, thanks for that offer. i'm trying to keep this one low and lean or i'de take you up on that offer. and, no i didn't do a tc drop kit. with that baby little lift i didn't need it. as for the nss override, i'm gonna keep it in there even after i clean the switch. i figure once this thing gets dumped in the mud and water up at yankee lake a few dozen times its gonna get hosed up again anyway.

i think i'm gonna change my plan for next week and skip the rear locker and go for a winch first with my new tires. i'm really close to gettin my wife to let me wheel her tahoe and i figured if she goes for it i can use the winch for both. locker may have to wait until may or june when the income tax check comes in.

not for long brother. i just ordered a new aussie locker and a winch today. ordering a 1.5" block kit for the rear tomorrow (the extra weight in the rear from all my gear is killing my ride height). hopefully i'll have everything on and done including the tires before the season opener at yankee lake on may 15th.

That should fix your ride height problem for ohh....maybe 2 or 3 weeks. Then you'll start getting bad axle wrap and will quickly be sitting lower than it was before you put the blocks in.

Either get new springs or an AAL if you need more lift. You'll quickly regret putting blocks in...esp with longer shackles.

Sure will. Check out the tahoe springs vs. the long thin leaves on your XJ. A ~1.5" block isn't going to KILL them, but you wont hold that lift height for long, especially if the stock springs are already sagging with normal weight from gear/tools etc...

EDIT: Your Tahoe doesn't go wheeling........

taken from another site:
Axle wrap is a problem that plagues leaf sprung vehicles with soft springs, particularly those that are set up SOA (Spring Over Axle). Axle wrap is something different than wheel hop. Wheel hop is when an axle on your rapidly hops up and down. Axle wrap is unwanted suspension movement that allows the pinion angle to change. Wheel hop is annoying and could cause drivetrain breakage, but usually it's not the actual hopping that breaks parts, it's the axle wrap that results from the hop that causes drivelines to bind and breaks yokes, drive shafts and sometimes even pinions.

i dont know what the name of the place was jesse. it was some coal mine about 5-10 minutes out of downtown. as far as axle wrap goes i've had lots of lifted chevys and 1 lifted yota and have never had it. never even knew what it was before i started reading about it on forums. sounds to me like its a result of improperly installed components. i have never experienced it nor would i suspect to at any time in the future. i'm gonna go with a rancho long add a leaf that claims 1-1/2 inches of lift. that coupled with the 2 inch extended rear shackles and the ton of extra rear weight i have in the back should get the dam thing sittin about level with the 2 inches i added in the front..

aquaholic

as an update: the rear is now locked with an aussie locker. despite what the directions say you'll have to remove the entire gear assembly to get it in.

edit: there is also very discernable clicking in turns with an aussie. it doesn't bother me at all but you will here it. i run a lock right it my tahoe with is completely silent 95% of the time and anly ratchets in very hard turns. this aussie locker may not be for you if the ratcheting noise is a concern during normal turning.

Sycotik Skier

what weight gear oil are you running? If you run the thicker stuff it makes it quieter. I know that's what the manual for my lock right said to do but with that being an aussie locker it might be different.

Yeah, improperly would be adding blocks to your flat springs. You will have a bit of wrap no matter what especially with that AAL. I'm sure those chevys that you love had it as well.

You can add a traction bar to remedy this but you shouldn't need it where you're at.

well i'm going to mount it to a 3/8 plate welded to a 2" draw bar so i can use it in the front or rear mounted tow receivers. that way i can winch in either direction. as soon as i can find a 3/8" 8"x12" plate to mount it to i'll have it done. looks like this only i'm making a heavier one. http://pickupextras.com/DrawTite-Universal-Winch-Mount-Plate-Winch/M/B001E8ZH78.htm?traffic_src=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_source=froogle
