I stumped on what shock to get for my k5 blazer buggy. I have read that nitro shock are a stiffer ride , but do not fade from heat. It can only be used for offroading.i'm building this thing on a budget so i dont want to buy bilsteins or remote resivoir shocks. I have skyjacker hyrdo's on my xj now.what do you guys thing?
The stiffness of a shock absorber is totally controlled by the internal valving, not the use of nitrogen. Virtually all auto shocks are hydraulic, but the use of nitrogen as opposed to ordinary air is that it helps reduce the tendency of the fluid to foam under heavy use. Foaming reduces the damping ability of the shock.

Im looking at skyjackers nitros or hydros from summit because i need 34" ext. l shocks. they carry skyjackers in 34" l in nitro & hydro, i was told that nitro shocks tend to ride stiffer the non nitro charged shocks.
I have the Rancho 9000XL on my truck and love them. You don't have to worry about stiffness because you can tune them through their adjustable knob 1-10. They are also huge and look and feel like they are tough.

I would suggest the Bilsteins or an adjustable as Ronin has. I have ridden in Jeeps with Bilsteins they were a world of difference compared to my skyjacker hydros, much smoother ride both on and offroad. When I was buying shocks (on the fly and cheap) I went to NWT and they suggested to stay away from the nitros as well for anything onroad. I have never seen them in action or ridden on them but they must earn that rapt for a reason.
I will be swapping up to bilsteins once the new axle is under, the ride quality is worth it.
I got the BDS nitro's on my Rubi. They ride great. But you did say "budget" right ?
i have Nitro 9000s under my heep from Rough Country, i feel every bump.
I perefer a Nitro on a Wheeler, but on a Street Rod I liked Hydro's better, I got a better launch using cheap hydros on my Nova.

This may be a stupid question, but if its only being used offroad and your on a budget, then whats the big concern about ride quality/stiffness/hardness?

X2, except that I think DT went the way of the dinosaurs... Need to find out who was making those shocks and what other brand you can buy it under. I think Rusty's were extremely similar, but his company drives me nuts.Quote:
