I was thinkin about gettin a set to run offroad year round with my a/t's but I got a good deal on my swampers so I put that on the back burner, they are for sure the great equalizer, I know that JDGreen04TJ runs em on his XJ trail rig, maybe he will chime in and tell ya where to snag em. Ive seen em new, for around 100 a pair for like 31s

I used tire chains on the rear axle of my lifted 2wd dodge dakota and went freakin everywhere with them. I did have a locker though but I had no problems keeping up with the 4x4's. I once got it stuck on a pipeline trail near RIT in Rochester, NY. I didn't have chains on at that time but I did have a rear locker so I jacked it up and mounted the chains. I drove out of the big rut i made and back to the road without an issue.

I don't use em anymore though cuz I like to get stuck in the jeep and using chains won't let that happen.

Put em on my old cub cadet, traction was amazing. You would sound like jingle bells rolling down the trail, and they kinda suck on rock because they can't dig in. They help on pretty much any terrain except solid rock. I would get a set.

Their handy to have if you get screwed up for sure (Would love to have a set in my Jeep that fit my tires in case of emergency)

That said, to rely on them regularly on a trail rig seems to be a bit silly IMHO

this all sounds very promising,.. tirechain.com or something like that has pairs for 60buckks.. anyone know how deep the snow on the roads has to be to run them on the streets?

we wheeled wellsville once and it was solid ice. one dude had like "chain loops" just a loop of chain on each wheel/tire. it made a difference for sure.

This is all I found so far....

Required on two tires on a driven axle on emergency routes when the roadway is covered with ice or snow.
If Pennsylvania officials post a route as a snow emergency route, all vehicles traveling on it will be required to have snow tires and/or chains on a drive axle.

    And this....
One set of chains or snow tires is required when vehicles are likely to encounter any adverse weather conditions which may require chains. They must consist of not less than five cross chains and must not project more than an inch on the outside surface of the wheel.

And HERE is a link to the vehicle code highlighted in the above pic.
With this being the section on chains...

    (d) Tire chains.--Tire chains may be temporarily used on vehicles during periods of snow and ice emergency if they are in conformance with regulations promulgated by the department.
    (e) Penalty.--
    (1) Any person violating the provisions of subsection (c) shall be guilty of a summary offense and, upon conviction thereof, shall be sentenced to pay a fine as indicated in paragraph (2) and, in default of payment thereof, shall undergo imprisonment for not more than 30 days.
    (2) Fines for violation of subsection (c) relating to the period of use of ice grips or tire studs shall be determined from the following chart based on the period of unauthorized use:
    April 16 to May 31 $35
    June 1 to June 30 45
    July 1 to July 31 55
    August 1 to August 31 55
    September 1 to September 30 55
    October 1 to October 31 55
    (3) Fines for any other violation of subsection (c) shall be determined according to the chart in paragraph (2) except that fines for violations occurring between November 1 to April 15 shall be $10.
    (Nov. 10, 1979, P.L.460, No.95, eff. imd.; July 10, 1984, P.L.679, No.146, eff. 60 days; May 20, 1993, P.L.30, No.10, eff. 60 days)

If the weather is so bad that you need chains, a cop is NOT going to pull you over. They dont want to get out there car in conditions like that. lol

O, and just to give you an idea, i got a price quoted the other day for chains for my YJ at about $70 for the pair.

And I can accept pay-pal, shipping wont be cheap though. But we can work something out.

Chains make a world of differance. I don't think I would use them for offroading all the time though. The chains would probably wear out faster and get beat up, constantly running them over rocks and mud. And you would have to check them and keep the tight all the time so they don't come off and do damage. Plus that is a lot of rotational mass if you need to spin your tires, and would put a good bit of stress on your axles. If your looking for better offroad performance I would just save up for and aggressive tread tire. Deffinately worth it for snow or the occasional muddy field.

What size tire do you have? I have a pair that fit a 28" tire.

I have to use tire chains to access my camp in the winter. The snow cover is usually pretty deep, and the trail is 2.5 miles up a mountain. Last winter I thought I could make it without mounting the chains, got stuck and had to put them on in the middle of a big snowstorm.
By the way they work better on the front axle, you have traction and you can steer.
