    YJ's With 4.0 Auto

Your thoughts? I found a clean one with low miles. But have never had a YJ with the 3spd auto. I wouldn't mind having one to wheel with, but I'm not sure of the durability or how it would act with 35's and 4.88's. Anyone here have any first hand knoweldge of the YJ's with autos?

    92, 2.5, 30, 8.8, 4.88, Locked, Winch, 15x8, 35's, 3.5" (RIP)

Yes I have quite a background with YJ's and auto's. Mr. Cheenin has Old Red with which I put over 300k miles on it as a daily driver and a pretty hardcore 4 wheel rig.

The 4.88's with 35's are quite doable as long as your axles hold up. I ran 4.10's with 33's. Only regret I had was no overdrive.

As far as wheeling, with a foot on the brake and one on the gas there was very few things I could'nt crawl over.

If you buy it, intend on draining that tranny, go with a fresh filter and if you have the extra bling put a shift improver kit in it. The transfer case shares fluid with the tranny so when you do one do both. The auto is a TF999 which is more or less a TF727 in shorter form. Good and beefy tranny.

If I was going to do another it would be a YJ auto.

interesting. I wonder what bell housing it has on it, since the 4.0 and the 2.5L don't share the same pattern, and the 2.8L v6 in the early XJ's didn't come in front of the AW4...

    AHHHHH

I was wondering! Because if you had found another alternative to the AW4 to Chevy 60deg pattern bellhousing, I wanted to know about it!

It does not share fluid. If it did, my D300 would be full of red fluid. The t-case provides a seal on the rear output of the transmission.

The TF999 is smaller version, not shorter. The bands are smaller in diameter than the 727. Length is quite close, if not identical.

That red YJ's automatic is still in there & now turning 38.5 Bogger's in big rocks & other aggressive terrain with the same 4.10 gears.

It's gonna get retired soon due to a swap to a 5 speed D300/NP231 doubler setup (If I was gonna leave it in there I would have put a new seal in front of it & added an aux tranny cooler), but no issues with it except for a mild front main seal leak so far.

I have an old 32RH (I think thats what it is) in my 6 cyl 89 YJ that I kept when I converted it over to the 4.0FI. That tranny works very well especially after I added the 7.5" x 13" aux tranny cooler, but the lack of a lock up torque convertor is noticeable in both hard uphill pulls on road & overall fuel economy.

Stop and grab Alex's jeep. She would probably let you take it for a day. 33's with 4.10's on an auto. That should give you a rought idea of what to expect.

Yup. Bone stock except for the newer radio. It even still has the factory spare tire cover. I'm gonna try to get mine torn down completely this weekend if anyone gets bored.
