Bought an EBR. Going to the range...

So I bought my first EBR yesterday. (Thanks Brent!)

I've been shooting for a long time, just never quite understood people who needed the EBRs. So I thought I'd buy one to see what all the fuss is about.

If you're reading this, then you probably saw the pics in his for sale thread. Bushmaster M4 style

    It is
    5.56 barrel -like
    1/9 twist -don't like
    14.5" barrel -think I like
looks to be barely shot -really like
Bushmaster -not crazy about the brand, but at least I can make jokes with the name... you know like when I showed the wife my gun and asked if she wanted to hold my bushmaster. It didn't work.

Now, I don't know too much about these but I'm going to go shoot it over the weekend. I'd like to try to sight it in and generally get to know it a little. I'll be iron sights only as it doesn't have any rails to mount the optics. I'll be looking for some rails if anybody has a rec for a site to order from.

It would be great if someone who has a clue wants to join me. Anybody interested in a little range time? I'll might do a little pistol too depending on how much time I waste on the AR.

If you decide you don't like it, let me know. It would look nice next to my AK

It could happen. My wife was pretty pissed at me yesterday for bringing it home.

And on that note, any Pgh stores that stock some decent accessories? I'd really like to get a scope mount for it tomorrow before I go shoot it.

That was actually a ton of fun. I'm still not sure why I own the gun, but I think I know why I need to keep owning the gun. It is a very accurate rifle with basically zero recoil. Add the illuminated red dot scope is crazy.

Now I just need to learn how much to adjust for distance and buy some more ammo.

Anybody local have it cheap? Looking for .223 or 5.56 in a 55 or 62 grain. Bought some at Big Buck for $11/ box of $20. It was cheap crap ammo, but I also bought a box of $22 Hornaday at Dicks and it didn't shoot as well.

Go to a gun show. 5.56 is running around $400/1000.

Or you could probably find it cheaper online.

Yeah, I was planning on buying some from the interwebs and I think it is a few months before the next local gun show... thought maybe there was somewhere local to pick some up in the meantime.

    Thanks

There is a show the last weekend of this month.

    http://forum.pafoa.org/gun-shows-111...-gun-show.html

There is a place in Koppel (up off 60) called Snake Run. I got a case of Privi Partisiasn(sp?) there for around $400. It's a cool little shop and worth a trip to shop around if you are looking for accessories.

If you keep an eye on gander mountain, they will have PMC Bronze (brass case), 20 rd boxes on sale for 5.99/box. Dunhams often has wolf steel case on sale for 5.50/box of 20.

Also, remanned ammo from Georgia Arms is a decent deal, I have shot alot of this stuff without any probs....

Do not run Wolf through your AR. I've seen two FTE, both involved Wolf ammo. One resulted in a busted cleaning rod to get it out.

People will tell both sides of this story, "I've never had a problem" and "That stuff is shit". Just ask yourself one question, do ya feel lucky?

The FTE problems were mostly associated with the older laquer coated cases. Havnt had any problems using the newer polymer coated stuff. Even after bump firing a 30 rd mag. I have over 1000 rds of the polymer coated wolf through mine and never once had any kind of issue. However, a guy a work was using the older wolf stuff and he had two FTE's.

I agree...I've had some problems with the old laquer coated stuff. I shot a ton of the poly coated stuff with no problems. This is true for the 7.62 X 39 also. Bump firing????

Is that what happens if you drop your rifle down a flight of stairs?

I don't know how old the wolf I saw FTE was, It looked pretty shiny.

Bump firing is when you don't squeeze the trigger, but rather push the gun towards your trigger finger. Upon firing, the recoil resets the trigger and your action of pushing against the trigger fires the next round. And so it goes. It fires like a full auto if you do it right.

It should only be done in certain instances, most ranges frown upon it as do many gun owners. Its not accurate, but damn fun. Search youtube for "bumpfire ar15".

If the wolf you saw was shiny, it was the laquer coated stuff. The poly coated is flat grey/green.

Ok, sorry. Sarcasm just doesn't transfer through the keyboard.

"Shiny" as in new, as in stored in a box away from moisture. (and it was grey)

As for this whole "bump firing" thing... aw forget it.

Gabe, need you to come up with a device that will cycle the bolt automatically. Should be a breeze to bump the .50 then. I will even let you try it first (while I stand off at a distance). A detailed sketch of the device in MS paint will be required first.

It can be done with a piece of string!

As for ammo I went down to guzaks it was

$280 for 1000rds of polymer wolf
$336 for 900rds of federal on 15rd strippers
    $380 for 1000rds of prizi
    $450 for 1000rds of winchester
