what do yall think about welded gears? depending on the gears that are in it, and im doing this thing on a budget(a pretty tight one), and its a trail only, yall think its worth it or do i HAAAAVE to go locker style? i figure since this is a trail only (but will still need to be inspected), it might just be cheaper to do that and not worry about the expense. what do yall think?

Go 4.10's or keep whatever gearing is in there. I never had problems running 4.88's but apparently the pinion becomes weak when geared that low. That D35 rear isn't going to hold up to welding. JMO.

Don't weld a 35 unles you're carrying spare shafts (lots) and have practiced replacing them!

whats the difference, stress wise, of a welded rear and a locked rear?

    They don't like either...lol

Not that it matters. If you're going to pick up the jeep just look for a different rear end to finish the build. I don't think you'll find an MJ with something else under it anyway.

I thought MJ's came with d44's? I wouldn't waste time on a d35. A d30 should hold up to thirty threes. Andy (aman-fred) is running an XJ with 33" BFG mt's and 4.10's. His is an auto and it'll smoke my Frontier so either my frontier is that gutless or 4.10's are a good choice for his application. Personally I would not go deeper than 4.56's because like tom said the pinion gets tiny and is prone to breaking. I also wouldn't suggest 35's on a D30, i hear axle shafts go really easily...

ok. well the rear still needs to be hung if im not mistaken. maybe ill find a 44 rear for now, and worry about the front later. since i dont plan on locking the front anyways. since it needs to be put it, this would be the best time to do it.

Problem with the Scout 44 is you'd have to find wheel spacer/bolt pattern adapters to keep them 5 on 4.5 like the Dana 30 front that is in it. Otherwise you would have to run two different bolt pattern wheels.

As far as Rear axle's in the 'manche's, they had Dana 35s and Dana 44s. Just like the late 80s XJ's did as well. Before you get all squirrelly lookin for axles make sure of what you have first

yeah ill see what it is first. if its not a 44, im gonna pick this up saturday. and i dont mind running a different wheel or a spacer. mainly cause this is a trail only vehicle anyways. but we'll see. i couldnt lock a 35 for $200 so i figure this is worth it.

Im not sure but I don't think that you can jump to 4:10 or lower with that carrier. see what you have first, and make sure the carrier offset will work for the gears you want to run.
