Dick's Purpose Built Adventure XJ Build

So I dont really have a build thread for this thing yet, and didnt know exactly what direction I wanted to take my build.

Well after some searchin around and tossin around a million ideas I finally decided what I wanted to do. The Adventure XJ thread on NAXJA is what has inspired me. So it took me FOREVER to decide just how i wanted my lift and tire setup to be but i finally decided on that too.

    So lets start: 89 XJ 231 aw4 2 door 155k

    Lift: RE 3.5 Superflex

    Tires: 33x10.50x15 BFG KM2

Add ons: 98 8.25 rear with aussie locker (have 3.55's btw)

Prolly go with rustys cut out flares so i can get an offset wheel and widen the stance a bit and still have coverage for PA laws.

This will essentially cover that part of my build.

Next will be setting up the inside and outside for camping/hiking/long road trips

I will be removing the back seat. well, folding down the back rest and removing the bottom of the seat so it lays flat. Ill keep the front seat for Lindsey

Ill be measuring in and out for storage. I plan on making the inside as easily accessable as possible. Ideas on how to set it up will be appreciated and ill throw out ideas as well when i come to them. Ill probably build storage from wood and try and have a drawer setup coming out the back. Id like to do 2 levels. bottom level be a drawer with tools, spare shafts, that sort of thing. top shelf be a flip open front and be able to store additional tools, miscellaneous items there. this whole set up would take the back half of the space. then i want to use the front half of the space for camping stuff. Cooler, and anything that I dont want in the elements(clothes, tp, towels, electronics, tent or tentcot, etc) Up top Ill have a rack. Spare tire would be going there. I know there are mixed opinions on this, but It will make the best use of my space. I might even put the cooler there too, but i dont want to be lifting that all over the place and worry about it being beat up or sloshing everything out. depending on how high I make the back storage space I might even make it where the cooler will be on top. measurements will be needed for this. This is a start for me and will give me plenty to do. having an idea of what direction I want to go in helps me tremendously in planning for the right stuff, and not doing things I dont need. (minus the 231/300 doubler that Ill do sometime next year haha)

I think that covers the start.

so, let the opinions and Ideas flow.

This is funny. I just finished doing a similar interior mod.

First thing you can do to make good use of wasted interior space is make a storage box out of the passenger side rear cubby hole. I'll show you a picture of mine later. I can fit a lot of things in there.

My tool and camping gear storage has always been evolving. About two years ago, I made a large tool box with a large drawer that pulled out the back, with the ability to keep the rear seat.

Last week I decided to go full out and built a full size box that goes from front seats to back hatch. It has two lids that open up, hinged in the middle between them, and it is about 8" tall. With a queen size air mattress on top, yes, I said queen size, the girlfriend and I have plenty of room for camping, and the box is strong enough for any activities that might ensue.

I'll try to take some pictures tonight, but I think my set-up is exactly what you're imagining.

Oh, and get that tire out of the jeep for room. Ideally on a swing away carrier on the back, or until you can get one, the roof is fine, but lame in my opinion haha.

Overall, my Jeep mods have been moving in the "adventure jeep" direction.

that sounds fantastic. If you could take a pic id appreciate it. theres a thread on NAXJA that has like 20 pages of pictures of rear storage spaces. Ill be getting some ideas there too. Its so relieving to have a clear idea of the purpose of my build now.

Yes, I just found that thread you brought back from the dead and skimmed it about the adventure XJ and I also saw the thread about the storage space. I'll get a bunch of pictures up here and over there some time this weekend.

Hey Dick, be sure to check out Expedition Portal. It has tons of adventure rigs of all types. I'm also leaning towards more of an expo vehicle vs pure off-road. There's plenty of ideas on different ways to setup your XJ.

Its kinda funny, I was reading a post on pirate in the IH section as to what guys bring. Its nothing compared to what I carry, a lot of them even leave their spare tires at home. I carry some stuff but at the end of the day its western pa, we never really get that far off the beaten path. As long as the rig can get dragged to the road there is always somebody around to tow it home....

well picked up the 8.25 yesterday. ill break into it today hopefully. axles are f'n heavy!! its still in my trunk. also got my fuel pump installed friday evening. not it starts about 1or 2 seconds of cranking. its beautiful haha. ill check pressure today and see if its more than 18psi like it was haha. so now when i order my lift, ill get the one for the 8.25. if anyone has an extra 8.25 ebrake cable id appreciate it.(of course ill pay haha) as the son of the guy who i bought it from thought it was a good idea to cut them. stupid kid. one step closer!

ill have a pretty decent setup(as in laundry list of items in my rig) by time its all said and done.

If you think those axles are heavy, try my 60 or 14 bolt. They're over 500 lbs each.

the next thing i need to do, figure out how to eliminate the vacuum disconnect on the 30 up front.
