Can anyone tell me how involved it is to replace the right rear axle seal on an '02 Grand Cherokee Laredo?
Don't know the particulars on it. It's my Dads. But if more info is needed, I'll find out.

which seal? it makes a big difference
taking unsafe rigs to a whole other level
Hmm, I'm guessing the outer axle shaft seal.
He took it to get inspected and all he told me so far was the mechanic said it looks like the axle seal is leaking.
Gonna try stopping by there later today and take a look at it.
Not even sure if it's a d35 or d44. But from a schematic, they look about the same to get to.

If it's a dana 30 its going to be the inner axle seal which means you have to pull the brakes, unit bearings, shafts and pull the carrier out of the diff. They are pressed outward from the inside of the diff.
It's actually not as hard as it sounds, search some sites I know there has to be a write up.

They can be a real PIA. Assuming it is setup with rear disc brakes and I am pretty sure they all are nowadays, here is the normal breakdown. Remove the caliper and the rotor. Next, remove the ebrake shoes. Take a pic of what they look like first! After that, there are four nuts on the backside of the backing plate they you need to take off. This will allow the axle to come out. Now is the fun part. That seal is held in by the bearing, which is held on by a collar which is pressed on. You need to cut the collar off to get the bearing off to get the seal off. So you cut it, remove it a voila! But, to put it back together you need to by a new bearing bc it comes with the collar. And that collar needs to be pressed back on. Honestly, in my opinion, pay a shop to do it. There is not a lot of learning curve there. You could ask to watch them so you know how to do the other side though. Hope this helps a bit.
Sounds like that Collar is a clinch ring, if its what I'm thinking off that can be a really good time to get off, Ask SuperScout, his Dana 44 rear has a setup like that he may have a tip.

Well, I talked to my dad. His mechanic said he'd do the job for under $200, so I think that's the way he's gonna do it.
But thanks a ton for the info.
