    Steering shaft in firewall

I disconnected my steering shaft from the box this morning and inspected the joint and rest of the shaft while I could. I noticed a pretty good clunk coming from where the shaft enters the firewall. What's in there? How does the shaft connect? Some kind of bearing in there, or another u-joint? I can't seem to see anything from the outside. I'm thinking this clunk/play is what's causing my steering wheel shimmy when I hit bumps. I've had this shimmy in the wheel for years. Annoying at times but nothing major.

Is that u-joint accessible from inside or...?

I wanna see if the joint is bad and if so I'll talk to ya about your spare.
