Dirt track chassis platform?

Hey guys. I've been thinking about picking up a used tube chassis as a start for a buggy. It was designed for dirt track racing.

Any opinions?

That could work. I remember seeing a sprint car chassis used for a rock buggy years ago.

I know a friend and I had looked at a late model chassis and thought about making it work for a buggy but it would have been more work than it was worth. That looks like it'd be a better platform though and they are usually pretty cheap

I've seen one used in a Southern buggy. I don't remember where I saw it tho.

I saw a guy running a former dirt car chassis asa rock buggy last year in VA. When I talked to him he had to reconfigure the front and rear tails of the chassis for suspension articulation. He thought it was worth it as the cage and frame were stout and he got it for a song.

Just keep in mind that those chassis probably won't fit a suspension seat. If you have back problems or want to be comfortable even after a hard day of wheeling, those hard bottom bucket seats may not be ideal for a crawler.

Otherwise, I don't see a problem with it provided that you can get the drivetrain and suspension to fit where you want it to. I'm not familiar with how dirt track cars are typically setup, but you may run into clearance issues if it's designed for independent front and/or rear suspension -- though I'm sure it could be worked around.

Yea the frame and buggy I saw he had to cut out and retriangulate the cage in the front and rear for upward swing and compression of the suspension. The dirt track cars don't need as much suspension articulation. Deffeintely add a suspension seat setu for however many passengers you are making it for. Also save your self some headaches- figure out what drivetrain you want to run- and get some foam/plastic dummies for your engine and trans setup- alot easier to fab up mounts and cross members.

I believe the front was designed for IFS, I can fix that. If I can scrounge up some cash over the next few weeks and it's still there; It will be in my garage as my next project.

Yeah, it should save me a ton in tube work, and it should be plenty strong if it is designed to race.

No, I haven't really had the time to work on my truck lately. I did look under there once at the prop valve while the pedal was being pushed and I can see the "pin" moving. I'm assuming that this isn't a good thing. I have everything that I need to eliminate it, I just haven't had the time.

glad you figured the truck out- hopefully. The will also be a vote of confidence if you ever put the greasy side up shinny side down- it should be plenty of strong.
