    Kayaking/Camping the Allegheny River

Yes, its another thread about kayaking and camping but this ones on a different river. The Allegheny up above Tionesta. I just ran it this weekend and its a great trip. We did 18 miles down to Tionesta.

The plan would be to head up either Friday or early Saturday. We will meet here on Saturday morning. You can rent a kayak there if you don't have one. If you have your own its $20 for hauling your stuff up river. They will take us up river as far as we want to go. There are places along the way to stop and grab some adult beverages if you want to. Lots of great scenery and places to get out and stretch.

Once we are off the river, we will head to some privately owned land for free primitive camping about 15 minutes away.. There will be a bonfire and food there. There is enough for 15-20 tents at least.

There is also some "nightlife" for those that want to do that.

Here are the photos from my trip this weekend. CLICK ME

Yeah a canoe could make it but you would have more fun in a kayak.

We do that trip almost every summer, usually in kayaks. It's a good time. We park our camper at Buckaloons and shuttle to/from Tidioute.

I have been looking at kayaks online and in the stores daily. I am trying to find the right one for me. Being a novice I am doing a lot of research before I buy. I am sure I should have one within the next couple of weeks. If the dates permit, I am in.

Dick's has a bunch on sale this week. I'm still fairly new to kayaking too Bill. This is my third season going. I have a 12' kayak now that works well for me.

Thanks for the info. I received the Dick's ad with all the kayaks in it. I also checked out Gander Mountain, REI, and Dunhams. I am not sure what I want at this point. I think I have over researched it. So much info. I am just not sure what is right for me.

I have considered a sit-on kayak, but also see the benefits of a sit in. Decisions, decisions...

IMO, the sit-on kayaks are nice but have a shorter season. If I lived down south where it was warmer longer I would get one. Up here I don't want to be getting wet when its 50 degrees out. Its nice to go out in the fall and float down the river relatively dry.

Bill, It's a drive, but you really want to talk to people about the perfect kayak for you and be properly fitted, go to Excursion's in Monroeville. They have decades of paddling experience and even if you don't buy from them, talking to them surely give you a much better feel for what will work for you.

    Dana,

Are you actually taking your camping gear with you down the river, or are you dropping it off Saturday morning at the camp site and then heading up river to put in?

And what exactly is "nightlife"? Are we talking a dance club?

Jason, this last time I went up early Saturday morning and left the gear in the Xterra, then setup camp that night. Mike went up Friday night and camped and left his stuff there. That's what I will doing this time. Probably leave early on Friday whatever weekend we decide to go and setup camp Friday night.

As far as nightlife, there is The Sportsman where Mike went Friday and Couger Bob's...

Go see Ryan at Weigel on the Water on Elk St. in Franklin. His selection is good, prices are great, and you can demo the boats in the river in front of his shop. Good dude. We have 5 kayaks, got a few of them from Ryan.

I'm going to try make this trip. This is something I've been thinking about doing for a while now. I did some research on kayaks last night and got an idea of what should work for me. We went to breakfast at Eat-n-Park this morning and I could see all the kayaks in front of Dick's SG. Next thing I knew I had this setting in the back yard. Field & Stream 12' Eagle Run Kayak (Camo version), got it and the paddle for $372 OTD.

The Dicks local to me only has the red one. I would prefer the camo version, but I have decided... Same kayak for me.

Don't know yet. I was thinking sometime mid to late June. July is really busy for me. I don't have many weekends free.

The weekend of June 23rd or the 30th maybe???

Depending on the dates I would be game. June is pretty much booked for me, but I could do anytime in July. Otherwise I will catch the next one too.
Is there any need for a skirt or is the water pretty tame?
