ok so I'm starting to collect part's for when the lowers come in. As far as the uppers are concerned, I'm curious about the .223's.
Is this what you guys are runnning?
I saw a 300 blackout up at Anthony's for $1000 but the ammo is PRETTY pricey.

I would give Cory a call on parts. I had the chance to talk to him a good bit on our way back from harrisburg, and he knows his stuff inside and out backwards with his eyes closed. he has seen a lot of what to get and what to stay away from as well.

Get a 5.56 if you want to shoot 223/5.56. I rock that and I'm saving for a .50 BMG upper, bolt action single shot.
Cory does have an upper in 300 Blackout. If you don't reload yourself, the price and availability of ammo is a bummer. The subsonic stuff through a suppressor is crazy quiet.

ok, I'll probably stick with the 5.56's but how do you feel about the 7.62x39 and how's the availability of the ammo?

It's definitely not as bad as 223 but like all the popular calibers you have to get lucky to find it in stock online or at Walmart.
By the time you find an upper for it ammo will be in back in stock probably.
What follows a massive run on lowers like we just had is a massive run on parts and uppers as people build rifles.
I keep looking at JSE for uppers and they haven't had anything in stock in awhile.
BCM and some other vendors have been listing them in stock online as they make them and selling out almost instantly.
Aero had some uppers in stock yesterday.

found complete uppers in stock at www.rguns.net . They have a mess of different barrels to choose from.
they are behind on shipping tho. up to 4 weeks

More like 6 to 8 weeks! I wouldn't order anything from them from awhile. They will not answer their phone or emails. Only Palmetto Arms comes close to their level of bad customer service.
Here is 5 pages of collective whining: http://forum.pafoa.org/rifles-42/202...ry-page-5.html
That rguns has a lot in stock suprisingly. Good prices also, but unfortunately almost all the reviews I've read are bad. Even the BBB gies them a F rating.
oh boy, has anyone tried Braverman's, Pittsburgh Tactical or Fetsko? Maybe I'll call them today.
Edit: last night their site said 4 weeks and this morning they're saying 2. I dunno.

If you find a good place to get barrels, let me know! What kind of barrel where you thinking about getting? I'm having a hard time deciding if I wanna go 16" with 1:9 twist or a 20" with 1:10

Look at what grain bullet you plan on shooting the most.
Thats where I'm running into troubles. Id like to shoot both .22lr's and .223 with the same barrel. For target/bulk/cheap ammo, .22lr's are usually about 40 grain and .223's are usually like 75 or 80 grain I think. I need to do a little more reading and figure out what a good common ground would be for the two. I'm starting to think a 20" with 1:10. I like how the 16" barrels look and how they keep the gun shorter, but I would like the extra 4" of length for better accuracy... and I figured with a more spread out twist of the barrel (1:10 compared to 1:9), it wouldn't overspin the .22's too awful bad and still do a great job with .223's

All the bulk stuff like Tula and wolf 223 is 55gr and that is pretty much all I shoot. My reloads I'm working on will all be 55 gr. I think lake city milsurp 556 is 62 gr. bullet length is what really matters but diferentiating by weight is most common. See below. My varmint 223 rifle is 1:12 and I can hit moment of ground hog at 300 yards on a calm day with almost any grain bullet. For a military style weapon I prefer 1:8 or 1:9 for shooting wolf and Tula all day.
Twist Rates
The .223 Rem shoots a wide range of bullets very effectively, from 35gr flat-based varmint bullets, to ultra-long 90gr VLDs. However, you'll need the right twist rate for your choice of bullet. For max velocity and accuracy with the lightest bullets, a 1:14" twist may be ideal. More versatile is a 1:12" twist that will allow you to shoot the popular 60-64 grain match bullets. (However, a 1:9" twist is needed for the steel-core 62gr bullet used in the M855 military loads, because that bullet is as long as most 70-grainers.) For normal lead-core jacketed bullets, a 1:9" twist will let you shoot up to 73gr bullets. Since most .223 Rem shooters prefer bullets in the 50-73gr range, a good "do-it-all" solution is a 9-twist, unless you're a Highpower competitor.
For long-range match purposes, long, high-BC bullets are favored for their ability to buck the wind. You'll want at least a 1:8" twist to shoot the 77gr and 80gr MatchKings and 80gr Bergers. To shoot the new 90gr pills, a 1:6.5" is recommended, though a true 1:7" will work in most conditions.
Overall, what twist rate is best? For varminting we like a 12-twist. The slower twist will give you a bit more velocity, and minimize the risk of jacket failure at high rpms. For general use, an 8-twist barrel will let you shoot the excellent 77gr and 80gr Sierra MatchKings and nearly all varieties of non-tracer milsurp ammo. We'd only select a 1:7" or faster twist barrel if we had a need to shoot the 90gr VLDs.

hmmm.... gives me something to think about. Thanks for that info. I guess I'm looking for the gun to perform best at 200-300 yards or so, do you think I even need a 20" barrel? What do you run on your varmint gun?

It is a 24" fluted bull barrel.
Honestly, if you want to do shooting like that, you might as well buy a single shot rifle like I have, and you'll save a lot compared to having an upper set up target shooting with a long bull barrel, free floating hand guard, etc. That brings up another option though. You could have an upper set up for target shooting and an upper with a 16" lit barrel, iron sights, and a standard hand guard. I don't picture the AR as a target rifle for better than minute of red coat, but many do. That's just my opinion.

does it have the bcg with it? thats a sweet find.
Nice score on the upper!
Heeph8er, if you are looking to shoot in the 2-300yd range consistently and accurately, I would move up to a 6mm, 6.5/284, etc. The .223 is great but past 200yds a lot of variables start affecting it. I shot high power rifle comp @200 yds. and was glad that I went from an AR to an m1 in 30-06. My groups got way tighter, YMMV.
