Just stopped at the local parts store, Pennzoil Synchromesh, not nearly as pricey. Reading online last night everyone said it was dealer only.

I just read this:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/7761621-post24.html
Apparently that pennzoil stuff is good for the NV3500 and NV 5600, but not 4500? Amsoil apparently makes a semi cheaper fluid I may look into.

I just checked Alldata and you are right, the 4500 is different. Castrol Syntorq LT is what goes in the 4500. GM PN 12346190
Should of bought an Avalanche...
As long as you double clutch and not granny shift like you're supposed to... That third gear will be fine. Had an old 3500 dump with 454 and nv4500 that had a bad 3rd syncro, sold it as is and still running to this day with no tranny work, other than slave cylinder. Had it down pretty good to where it would rarely grind.
When I test drove I shifted it with no issues, than I bought it I couldnt get it to shift without grinding to save my life lol. Down shifting is a little trickier. Without the trailer I just run 2nd to 4th, hardly bogs down at all. Ill get a handle on it, I just keep forgetting to double clutch lol.

Ordered up 5 quarts of the Amsoil stuff half the price of the dealer fluid.

Good catch guys, almost paniced when I saw Synchromesh mentioned!
That was what was in it already, and though with the third gear issue & people driving it without being good at RPM shifting it probably could use changed, the fluid was actually fairly new in it.
I tried the two quarts over trick with Lucas synthetic oil additive (Make sure you have a big drain pan!), and though it helped a bit with double clutching, it didn't do anything for the synchro issue.

Haha, yeah caught me by surprise when I pulled the drain plug. I ran 5 quarts of the Amsoil, wasnt sure if 2 would be too much or not. It pretty much shifts the same. Dragging the Scout to New Jersey today, leaving straight from work, dear god does this thing have power. Hills that the 5.3 would be screaming up in 2nd, this truck Cruises up in 4th like its not even there. Hopefully no issues.

Little update had the truck for about a month now. Love it, other than the third gear issue the truck has gobs of power. Dragged the Scout and a weekend worth of camping gear to Jersey on the turnpike and it hardly struggled. Never dropped into the 3rd the entire trip. 4th and 5th all the way there.

Yeah it's a beast - I honestly considered pulling out that engine & trans to drop into my old 86 K30 Crew Cab dually & probably would have if it wouldn't have been such a waste of the rest of a good truck to leave it an empty shell.
Hopefully I can get my old emissions strangled peanut port 454 to run like that Vortec - If I pull that off this old Chebby of mine will be an animal!
