    GMC K2500 Whine

I gotta tear into it, but I figure if someone has dealt with this before it would be easier. 1998 K2500 5 speed 4 wheel drive. Driving down the road, It will randomly start whining, its very loud. Once the whining start it doesnt matter what gear I shift into, clutch in and out, whatever the whine is constant. The faster I got the louder it whines, the slower I go the lower it whines. The only thing that will make it stop whining is to hit the brakes and slow down enough that it starts. I can than continue on my way, no more whining. Any clue what that could be ? I was thinking caliper holding up, but not sure if that makes any sense.

My thought is hitting your brakes only shifts what sounds like to me is a bad bearing in your drive line. Can you identify where the noise is coming from? back/middle/front? The clutch in or out and the noise doesn't change should eliminate the throughout bearing.

Clutch in or out makes no difference. It sounds like its coming from the front end.

Maybe, they always seem to make a grinding or helicopter noise. This is like a high pitch whining noise, and it will go away completely. Sometimes ill drive it, wont make the noise once others it starts up. Annoying.

So, its just the nature of the beast. Figures I really liked the fact that this truck made less awful noises than the old one lol. I'll still give it a once over when the weather breaks.

I have the nv4500 as well and mine doesn't whine, well a little but it's the hydroboost, not really noticeable at all. Friend of mine had the same truck, minus one year and his whined ALL THE TIME, sounded like he had a procharger under the hood, it was the hydroboost as well and never became an issue.
