I thought cannon balls were made in "shot towers".

I think that's what they were called. Been awhile since I read about them in a high school physics textbook.

Basically a tower built so that when a cannon ball or musket ball was still semi-molten it could be dropped down the tower into a barrel of water. On the way down the ball of metal would cool and have a uniform density due to the free fall. If it cooled sitting in a mold then heavier material would settle to the bottom and produce a cannon ball that wouldn't straight and kill those damn redcoats!

It is possible that furnace could have been making shot if it was built during the right time period because shot towers wern't across the pond till 18-- something...the first one was thought up in England in 1775 this site says and plenty still stand in the US - http://everything2.com/title/Shot+Tower

that was super interesting. but to make a cannon ball by that method it would have to be dropped pretty far if it's even possible. I would think the lead mass of a cannon ball dropped in liquid form would divide in the air.
    but wtf do i know.

Can someone tell me where the falls are exactly. Whether it is through a pm or on this thread. Also, if anyone wants to go down and check it out I am game. Maybe bring some trash bags and clean it up a bit too.

Hey thats only about 10 minutes from my house...yes it is party central there. The last time I was back in there it was pretty torn up. There are a couple different trails you can take to get down in there...either from a.k.a. Chaintown, the state game lands by the Boy Scout park, or from river road. I would be in for going back there to clean it up some...it would be a good time!
