Thread: What to add to a stock Rubi?

What to add to a stock Rubi?

I know this is pretty wide open question, but I have a pretty much stock 04 Rubicon. I added a K&N intake, XM, and a CB antenna on the spare tire mount. That's about it for customization. Anything I could do (relatively) cheaply to add some extra off-roadability to this one? I would love to do a lift this spring.

a lift was the first thing that came to my mind, bigger is always better!! But, watch how big...it makes them a little hard to handle on the higway... 3-4 " I think is good if its your Daily Driver.

I would start out with some skids such as the steering box and even the engine. Also some rocker protection. The stock ones are ok until you teeter on a rock.

    Protection first.

I would also add to the list, diff protection (especially the front).

33"s & just enough lift to clear them (2" body lift would even work fi you don't wanna mess with your suspension)

Thats all I'd do to a Rubi for capability, that coupled with the protection noted above would net you a very nice Street & trail wheeler

A good option for a cheap lift would be 2" Budget Boost.

What have you found that you've been unable to do with your rubi with its current setup? I'd start there.

if youre looking to do a capable/affordable lift combination, go for the 2" budget boost and a 1" body lift. you can comfortably fit 33's under your jeep with that, and stay very streetable.

The FIRST thing you should buy is a winch and a highlift jack. Recovery equipment is a must, no matter how big you build it you will find a way to get it stuck.

the first thing i did on my truck is lift it and bigger tires, so i would suggest that. 3-4 inches overall would be great for on and off road...and then some bfg 33x10.5R15's on some 15x8 black steelies. Thats what i would do. Then definitly protection stuff, and then recovery stuff. Thats just what i would do and the order i would do it in. But hey, just my opinion

also, LOCKERS RULE! lol i just found this out

    X2

Most important thing to get is recovery equipment. A highlift jack or come-a-long at the very least. If you want to build it to wheel it then you need to remember you will get stuck no matter how built it is.

I'm surprised how many people don't even own a strap! Anyone that does not have one, go buy one now!!!

Also make sure you have the basic tools in the vehicle. Find all of the places to hide them.

And even before the recovery equip., TOILET PAPER!

I gotta agree with this. If you haven't wheeled it stock yet, I would try to a few times to see what you find the limitations to be. You may find that it can do everything you want it to already. If it doesn't totally suit your needs, you should be able to get some idea about how you want to mod it in the future.

That being said, I would focus on protection (skids, etc) and recovery stuff before a lift.

The only thing I've had trouble with so far with mine was the tires are not the best mud tire and the belly pan is a shovel. I'm thinking a set of baja claws and the belly tuck, +1" motor mount riser and 1" body lift would be the best bang for the buck for a stock rubi.

I was thinking about a winch. I haven’t been in any real bad stuck situations but it sure could have helped out in a few! Does anyone have any recommendations for a good winch?

Warn, obviously being one of the best...can't go wrong with a 9.5ti, or an XD9000. It really depends on what you wanna spend. I'd stay up around the 9,000lb rating. Save yourself the hassle...and get something with a synthetic winch line right from the get-go. I'd imagine you wanna keep the weight down a bit, running a stock suspension at the moment...synthetic line will definately help with that.

If you get a winch, you'll also need a winch plate/bunper to mount it to.

Forgo the winch, buy yourself a hi-lift and a recovery strap (no metal hooks).

Just curious, when you say you got a K&N Intake, do you have just the drop in filter or do you have an open air system?

Just start wheeling with groups where someone has a winch, after that for awhile you'll KNOW what you need to get.

1"BL/MM was my first upgrade, and was WELL worth it.

I'm willing to bet that you could easily run a 265/75/16 with a 1" body lift and have no rub 1" really made a huge difference in the fender wells and kept the stock ride.

I ran my 1" BL over the summer and did a rancho 3" susp. in november, I'm running 285/75/16 bfg mt's now. it's pretty much perfect height for me and it's all you really need to get just about anywhere in this area i'd say.

Just from seeing everyone else running 35's and larger, a 33 or 34 is the largest tire you want to run to keep your ride daily drivable. Is it possible to go bigger, definately but you're going to have to know someone to get it inspected and safety is definately reduced for many reasons...

As for winches, I have a 9,000lb Ramsey that's at least 20 years old and still works like a charm on my camp truck (79 F250 long bed). It was strong enough to yank that truck out from being the meat in a cherry/white oak sandwich.

I'm sure Warn is just as good if not better.
