    Frame repair

I'm getting ready to start a small restoration on my old YJ. I found a small crack by the steering box and some rust holes by the rear shackles. I plan on having plates welded to the frame and I'm going to purchase my first welder. Any suggestions on which one/type I should purchase? I know frame repairs aren't normally the best idea but this will mostly be a trail rig. Also has anybody else successfully done these repairs?

I would buy a Lincoln or miller 220v mag and run gas shielding, not flux core.

You can buy repair pieces premade to weld to your frame.

Thanks for the reply.. I was going to save myself the trouble and just get rid of it but I don't have the will power to do so

It's rewarding to repair things. You won't regret it. We have a Hobart Handler 140 mig machine setup with dual plugs it can run on 120 or 240v power. It was relatively cheap on sale at Tractor Supply. I'm sure Amazon has good deals on them or Cyber weld or somebody. We got it because it was small and can go into the field with me or my brother to run it off a generator to do field repairs quickly. I want to go ahead and buy a Hobart Ironman 230 with the aluminum spool gun or a multi process machine. Hobart is a Miller. Just an FYI, and your generally not paying for the blue paint.

I agree that a MIG machine is the right thing to buy if you don't have any experience with any of welding styles and you're learning from scratch. All of the brands mentioned above are also good to go.

I second the Hobart awesome machines for the $. I have the 190 and love it. IMHO buy a 220v and you will never need to buy another.

Any go-to shop for sectioning in TJ frame? I need the rear control arm section graft. Past the point of plating, not something I'm going to attempt.
