    Damaged Splines on Axleshaft

So, while wheelin' at Southington last weekend, my buddy blew up the rear axle on his Land Rover. It looks like the cross pin sheared, the spider gears fell out, and tore up everything else. Luckily it's a 3rd member, so he can easily get a junkyard replacement. But here's the question: I noticed the one axleshaft has some definite damage. I feel like, at the very least, that shaft should be replaced. My buddy is debating replacing it, because he's already dropping a few hundred to replace the 3rd member, plus only 5 or 6 splines show the damage. Do you think it'll live to wheel another day on those splines? Or do you agree with me that it should be replaced? Thanks!

    Here's the carnage:

Personally, I would run it while I looked for a good deal on a spare

That's what he's doing, with the intention of upgrading axle shafts, adding a locker, etc. Hopefully there's enough time between wheelin'trips to complete it.

I've pulled much worse than that, twisted splines, from the pic that doesn't look too bad!

I'd clean those splines up with an appropriate sized file if they are a little chewed and send that thing down another trail. I'm not afraid of what I see from the picture.
