Open public spaces for crawling are damn few these days. Maybe ride along with a club - for help spotting, winching, etc. - and maybe decide if you wanna join them.

I should have said, "JOIN them... for a RIDE-along."

My club - Steeltown Offroaders - allows non-members to come along for a ride, and "test drive" the club, as it were - see if you like us or not. Can't speak to other clubs, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had similar policies.
