Xterra and No Roof Rack (jackb1)

As to not hi-jack the other thread any longer. Here is the X without the roof rack.

Jason, did Ralph get the skid for you air tank finished yet? I would like to know a little more about that...it sounded pretty slick.

I think it looks like a Mini Van with a beefy bumper.

    Tom,

Yeah, Ralph finished it, but I haven't been able to get the compressor hooked up and the skid mounted yet (weather hasn't been helping).

Basically I have a 4gallon pancake tank and a small sealed compressor that will mount on the skid. The skid mounts under where the spare tire use to be. The air intake for the compressor will be plumbed into the back cargo area to keep it dry and the output for the tank will come out of the small hole that was used to lower the spare tire.

Basically, when mounted it will look kind of like a Jeep gas tank, but tucked up better.

He now has the stock rack to try and make me a custom rack.

I have a few other projects for him.

Oh, and I should add. I gained over 1mpg around town and around 2mpg on the highway after taking it off.

I really need to yank my roof rack too, my engine revs lower on the HWY and stays in gear without having to shift into OD. I might just remove it this weekend.

I prefer the X without the rack. There's a nice blue one at North Hills Toyota for sale. No lift or anything, but it looks good w/ no rack and the 31" MT/R tires...

Huh? It's actually anti-bling to the max! You would like it...w/ the 31's and the black steelies. I'll see if I can dig up a picture.

I like it better with the rack. To me its one of things that made the X unique looking.

I think it looks bigger without the rack, since the body height at least seems to be less of a high profile.

I think I like it more with it as well by far, but for even 1mpg gain, I'd ditch it without even thinking twice!

That would be like me saying I'm going down to stock 28"s instead of 36"s because I'll get better gas mileage...

Thanks for posting those pics. I like it w/o the rack about as much as with the rack. Still looks good, just a different feel. Whats left for holes on the roof?

Currently I have electrical putty in most of them (and RTV silicon in the front two). It's not a perm solution, but it works for now. If I was going to leave it off I would silicon the screws and put them back in. There are only 4 you would have to really worry about a lot as they are larger and flush with the roof line. The rest stick up a bit.
