More offroad comp pics from oz

Thought I might share some more pics that I took at the Tuff Truck competition in Australia a few years ago. This competion was held about an hours drive north of Sydney. The comp goes for three days and has night time stages and an on-road navigation stage, so the trucks have to be road legal aswell. Some of these rigs really push the boundaries of legal...

It was an offroad compition. In order to get insuance for the event they probaly had to make all the competitors wear helmets.

Thats right. A co-driver actually died from head injuries at at comp a few years ago during a roll over so the helmet requirment was then introduced. Looks kind of strange but it is a sensible thing.
Normal 'weekend wheelers' dont have to wear helmets.

I was too busy lookin at the pics and didnt read that it was a competition.

I do take my helmet in my buggy when I know I'm gonna get real crazy with it. It keeps the bogger turds out of face too.

Looks like some awesome terrain to wheel on. When are you setting us up for a trail ride?

Probably would. I need to pull 3 or 4 spark plugs out and run it like that. That way it will have as power as yours.:098:

Its weird how the gas pedal gets put to the floor no matter how big or small the engine is. Mine just makes alot more noise, broken parts.....and fun too.

I thought Australia was CRAZY strict about street legal vehicles

I remember reading something about the Mad Max car needing a couple mods just to be legally driven over there, so how does the 4x4's get away with it?

Awesome looking terrain, that would be some sweet wheeling no doubt!

They have course hotties there too I see

From memory im pretty sure some of the more heavily modified rigs ran slightly different set ups for the on road stages, like running smaller tires or putting the windshield frame back on etc. Usually running in 'street' config hinders the performance a bit but they make up for that with the advantage off road, if you know what I mean. Also I think they've stopped doing onroad stuff now.
Even thought the legal stuff is pretty strict, you can get modifications 'engineered'. This means you can take your rig to a licenced and registered automotive engineer who then tests and inspects your mods and decides if they affect safety or anything like that. For example, the law says you can not swap in an engine of a larger capacity than what was originally offered from the factory in any model variant, however, an engineer can override that if you have compensated for the increase in power by upgrading your brakes to match etc. The worst bit about getting things engineered is the cost. Usually about $500+.
