I know nothing about the MTZ. You can't go wrong with a BF Goodrich Mud Terrain though...Of the 3 sets of tires I had on my Jeep, those wore the best. 40,000+ miles.

Agreed with Steve. I just bought BFG MTs about two months ago, very happy. It's like someone else said, you will hear of better tires out there, but you will never hear anything bad about them.

I used to run Destination MT's, basically a BFG MT knockoff, very similar tread, but I don't think the compound was as good. Got about 30k out of them, mostly road miles as this is my dd. All in all they were a good tire for almost half the price of the BFGs. A big part of the BFGs is are you willing to spend more on them.

I think Dave, notmyj, has/had the Thompson MTZ. He had some really odd chipping on them. You may want to ask him.

I will chime in here as well. I have had my fair share of different tires on various Wranglers. I have run the TrXus, BFG ATs, BFG MTs, Goodyear MTRs, and a few others not even worth mentioning. I prefer the BFG MTs for my application. (If it were not a Rubi, and my DD I would probably have BFG ATs.) I don't think you can go wrong with the BFGs.

If you do alot of mud, like everyone else said you cant go wrong with the BFG MT. They are a bit more costly than some other mud-terrains, but you'll get no way near the amount of life out of the knock off brands than you will with the BFG. If you like the tread design of the MTZ's, look at the cooper discovery STT's. They are practically the same tire, but generally cost alot less.

On a side note, Bill, you said you've ran the TrXus MT's....how did you like those? I've heard mixed opinions about them, mostly just that there hard to balance. Any insight?

I can second that. They performed well offroad, but when it comes to on-road driving and the balancing issues they are really bad. I would never buy them again if that tells you anything.

I've been running ProComp MT for two months. A little slippery in rain but work well in snow and mud. Would think twice about them again.

How did they do in mud? The lugs seem to be close together which would lead me to believe that they would cake up easily?

I'd love to go with a TSL...but with a commute up to erie and back about twice a month, I dont think thats the best idea.

if the compound of the mtz is the same as the compound of the claw radial then i think it's a good tire... the tread design is decent... and i've had my claws on two different jeeps... soon to be 3... only reason two tires wore funny was because i bent my outer c's from launching it...
chris is right though... cooper makes a damn fine tire for the money... so does dunlap... you can pick up some 33x12.5 at sams club for like 113 a pop...

I had a set of Trxus MT's on my TJ. I would say the Trxus's were definitely better in the mud than the BFG MT's, but they are no where near the quality of tire. I got about 18k out of my Trxus tires. I already have about 25-30k on my BFG MT's and they are still doing great. I am expecting to get over 50k miles out of them which can not be beat for a mud tire.

Really? I would have thought the BFG's would be better in mud because they have deeper/more spread apart lugs. Hmm...guess thats why personal experience is better than guessing. Thanks!
When/'If' I go bigger come summer, I think its going to come down to the BFG's or the Trxus's. How much money is in the bank is going to determine which ones I get, lol.

Face in. Black wall out looks so much better...I always see white out as a classic car type thing. Somewhat cheesy.

    Thumbs up

    http://high-tec-retreading.com//Desk...240&tabindex=1

you guys ever read about these tires? i have been researching them and hear nothing but good things, they dont peel off like a normal retread and some come with BFG casings (tougher sidewall) and for a 33 inch tire its only 80 bucks a tire also if you buy a 33 inch tire from them i hear that they are actually about a 34-34 1/2 because of adding more rubber to the casing. i might actually get a set when its time for tires....check em out lemme know what you think

It has nothing to do with quality...Swampers were orginally made for mud even though the truxus MT is on the more mild range...BFG M/T's are a street tire that you can somewhat use offroad.
