Ya, the front axle needs replaced! Low pinion front 44 brings the suck!!! He broke atlest one shaft every time he had it out!!! New front axle, and I would lower it about 8in, he flopped that thing as often as he broke axles!!
Thats right. I have been looking around for a 60 but will wheel it with whats in there.
Here is the basics:
'87 YJ, weber carb, HEI on the engine. NP435 out of a 76...77? Ford F250. CJ clutch set up, mated to the NP205. T.W. driveshaft going to the 1410 yoke on the 14bolt, welded spiders, disc brakes. Front axle is a '76 F-250 D44, cross over steering, knuckle work done by Parts Mike, lock rite locker. 4.10 gears
Some progress, I pulled the head and will take it to the machine shop tomorrow to be checked.
Brian (Jackb1 on the board) hooked me up with some sheet metal for the front. Steve and I are going to paint it like John did originally, Chevy orange with the punisher logo on a black background.
I am not going to start a thread about it but we are calling the Jeep the Punisher, because it had the punisher logos on it. Decent name?
I love the name. I did a Punisher logo pumpkin this year. That skull design looks good!!

punisher is bad ass
Punisher got a new front axle at about 10pm tonight. We left the shop, I was home for about 10 minutes, and Dave called me asking if I wanted to go to South Park to pick up an HP60 w/ 4:10's out of a burnt '04 F-350 that was on Craigslist for all of 10 minutes before he found it. So, off we went...I've dealt with 60's before, but this was by far the heaviest axle I've ever helped picked up in my life!!! It took five of us to get it in my truck, and once back at the shop, there were only Dave and myself. So...out came the engine hoist.
Crappy night time Q picture:
P.S. Yes...the axle is upside down, before anyone starts asking.
Other updates include a freshly cut head, new headgasket, valve cover gasket, water pump, and the new CJ grille and hood got a couple coats of Chevy orange today. The punisher logo will get masked off and painted soon as well.
Update:
The head is back on, the motor still sounds terrible but no more leaking headgaskets.
The hood and grill are almost ready to go on.
Steve and I picked up a high pinion 60 for the front. It even has the right gears (4.10s)
We were posting at the same time.
That axle is really F'ing heavy.
So drunkfest turned into wrenchfest?
Whats up with the other tub thats layin there
When in doubt, put the hammer down
damn you're not wasting any time... that's awesome that you are bringing the choo choo train back...
and yes the punisher skull logo is bad ass...

Nice find!! You going to run adapter to match the bolt pattern up or just run different bolt pattern wheels? Cause you know they arent the same bolt pattern as the rear.
