    lookin to start a club

hey everybody! i'm new to the board and i pissed some people off yesterday but what the hell, thats just me. i dont mean no harm. so for like a couple years now i've wanted to start a club just never knew how or had the people. anyway i find myself here among you guys and gals so i figure i'll give it a shot. i'm a member of erie county mud mushers but they are so far away the travel time sucks. 3 hours 15 minutes one way for those of you wondering. i have some ideas and some borrowed by-laws to help start this thing out now i'm lookin for people. if your interested let me know. we can figure out all the details later but for now lets just start gettin together and doin some talkin. btw i dont know if its ok to post this in this forum so if you gotta move it be my guest.

I think there might be a little more to this than you realize, or your post could be a little bland. Becoming an organization requires a lot of manpower, time, and even money. A club becomes a liability, whereas if "we," PghOffRoad, go on a trailride, its just a buncha guys and gals getting together for some fun. You have to have insurance, etc. if you plan on holding actual events.

I think you're looking at this a little backwards, you should be figuring out all the details before you proceed forward. Otherwise, you may waste lots of time and burn in flames if you reach a bump in the road that you can't overcome.

I think there was talk of turning this forum into a club, but it's just too damn tedious and costly.

Yeah those that run actual organizations seem to have a lot of time and money invested, I'd talk to the people from HRJA or Blacklist as they are full out organizations as well as offroad clubs..

Are you talking about land that is privately owned and offered for usage, land that is for sale and to be purchased by your "club," or land that is privately owned and will be leased to a club?

I'm hoping you don't plan on purchasing land, I can assure you that distributing that expense through club members will never happen.

At least you are thinking right. Private land with some sort of legal arrangement to limit liability may be the future of offroading in PA. Instead of a club I would suggest that you figure out the terms with the landowner and see if others will go in on it with you. You may need to consult a lawyer as well.

Theres lots of clubs around. Clubs help limit liability, not gain liability. Clubs are typically non-profit corporations and have members. A corporation helps limit liability and having members does as well. As a member of a club you would have a hard time suing that club. It would be like suing yourself. However if you do something stupid on the trail and someone gets hurt you can and should be liable.

^ even if you sign a waver to insure not being sued?

    As its stands

Me,Zack (megamus) and chop are in.

anyone else like to help out getting it going?

    I figure non-profit club naturally.

    As a business student...

There is WAY more to starting a non-profit corp than just saying "ok, I'm a non-profit corp"

There's forms, tax law, paperwork, etc. non-profits tend to take the most scrutiny over any other form of corporation, because the thought is that most people are greedy and want to make a profit.

Not trying to discourage you, but you should have an idea of what all you're getting into...

Well hell that sounds like enough. Why don't you guys meet the fifth tuesday of every third month?

Why do you want to start your own club? What do you have to offer that other clubs don't already? What are you going to do to improve the 4x4 community or the community as a whole? What goals or missions will your club have?

There's lots of clubs already in existence, if you think you have something to offer, try to become involved in them, be an active member or maybe an officer.

This isn't eactly a club here, but more like a group of friends that hang out and wheel together, there BLWA, NEC , SteellCity 4x4, Triangle fourwheelrs?, Big Rubbers, PaWheeling?.

Or start your own, either way goodluck.
