    Cherokee Help

Hows it going guys. I'm hoping someone with an XJ is lurking around on this sunday afternoon and might be able to help me out a bit. I'm working on a friends Cherokee; replacing the front end from where she t-boned somebody and my progress has been hindered by the stupidest thing ever.

There is a plastic piece that holds the antenna onto the fender. You can screw the antenna off and disconnect the wire on the inside of the fender but the plastic piece attached to the fender is what ties the two together. For hours I have been trying to figure out how to get the entire piece off. On the inside theres like a washer with teeth so I tried holding it still and unscrewing the top end. NOTHING WORKS...and this is the only thing stopping me from putting this thing back together.

If anybody might know what the hell im talking about and might be able to offer some advice on how to get this stupid little piece off Id GREATLY appreciate it. Heres a pic for reference, this isnt her jeep but the only picture I could find that was close enough to show detail of the piece in question.

.....then again that used to be my motto until I got the Jeep...now THAT doesn't even work half the time.

Alright guys I broke the dremel out and just cut around the area where the antenna thing is and separated it from the fender.

I'm beginning to wonder if this was a piece that was supposed to ALREADY be on the replacement fender I have (which does not have the piece...just the cut out hole) and for some reason it is not on there. I apologize for the lack of descriptive pics but I currently have no way of taking them. Hopefully I can get this figured out

Hmmm, it should come off the fender, I just don't remember how. Try gently prying with a screwdriver. Might just be glued on if its the piece I'm thinking of.

The plastic part is actually two pieces, IIRC. You feed it through from the inside of the fender, stack the other piece of plastic on the exterior, and the nut should thread over that. The nut should have 4 small notches in it. Obviously you don't have the special service tool, or you would have used it. Just grab a flat head screwdriver and a hammer, and use those tools to spin the nut off of there.

I didn't want to ruin it since it wasn't my Jeep I was working on. As far as the whole it being two pieces and spinning apart stuff, I tried numerous times using different methods trying to unscrew something. I even found a big enough socket to fit over the top part, the part that protrudes from the fender and no luck with anything coming apart.

Desperate times call for desperate measures so I got Dremel crazy and literally cut the entire thing out of the fender. Then cut it down enough that I could fit it into the slot on the new fender. After some more trimming and such it finally slid into place and I ghetto rigged it inside the fender so that it wont pull out.

Thanks for the input guys, I got so fed up with such a stupid thing but finally got it to work out. I guess it is true that sometimes the easiest projects turn into something far more difficult.

I finally got it all finished up for her minus putting the new front bumper on because she has to go home and get it.

Mission successful....and just because I was bitter at the end...I decided instead of putting her Jeep emblem lettering back on in the proper order I just decided to spell out PEE instead. So if anyone sees a chick driving a cherokee with the word Pee on the grill...feel free to let me know.
