    Camping places...

alright, i am looking for a new place to camp over memorial weekend.... i would like to find a place near a lake (large or small), near some hiking trails, and private. I would prefer not to stay in a State Park, as i plan on boozing! I also need a place thats dog friendly... and i would like a place in a mountainous area... and not a yogi bear park where hundreds of people and kids are running around...

Has anyone been camping out near sideling hill right off the turnpike??

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Tall Oaks Campground in Farmington would fit the bill nicely. The only part i am not sure of is allowing dogs. It is right by Ohiopyle, but it is not on state park land. Boozing = ok, lots of hiking, fishing etc...and on a nice mountain to boot. i think it is about $9 a night per person plots are primitive, but there is a shower house/electricity at the entrance. They have always been real accomodating for us. ask for a plot up on the back fields 724-329-4777. 10 minute drive to yough/rafting launch area, beer distributor real close, and about 8 minutes from nemecolin.

we do a yearly rafting and camping trip. never been disappointed.

Ummm, well its memorial day weekend. I think unless you go to a place that isn't a campground your gonna have a ton of people/kids running around. as it is Memorial day weekend and lots of people have the camping bug for then, its the only weekend I try to not camp!!

I camped a few years ago at:

    http://www.pinehillcampground.com/

it is a little campground, kinda off the beaten path in WV, right off of 68 near the MD line... from there you could go east over to MD and swallow falls state park for hiking or Deep Creek Lake, or you could go west to Coopers Rock.

I boozed it up when I was there. It doesn't have a bazillion amenities like a pool or huge kickass playground & stuff, so I imagine the family traffic isn't as big as most campgrounds.

If you go the place Mel mentioned check out Tygart Lake. It's nice and clear and will be much less crowded than DCL that weekend.

The PghOffRoad group has been out there a couple of times. It is nice. I am sure we will be out there again at least once this summer.

    Also,

Right on lake Erie. Very nice. A few of us stayed there for a weekend last year. It was excellent. I am sure I will be there again this spring / summer.

X2 We camped there a few times. Once was labor day weekend and it wasnt that crowded at all. If you tent camp, some of theyre primative sites are really private... Love the area too! Some great hikin down that way.

i had planned on camping at http://www.campersparadise.net/

but they required a 3 night minimum and money up front... since i am camping with the dog i didn't want to stay 3 nights in a tent with her, who will more than likely stink from swimming all day.

Looks like a cool place but I think most places up near cooks forest are 3 night deals.

    What about pymatuning lake campgrounds?

I've been up there a bunch of times...and its along the same lines with less tourist attractions like cooks forest.

We stayed here at cooks forest last year for forth of July..
    http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/statepar...rest_maps.aspx

Its a state park camp ground so theres no alcohol technicly, But if you dont get out of control youll be fine. I dont think there was anyone there wasnt drinkin. Pet friendly and no minamum stay.

The primative sites are pretty private. Heres a pic. Our closest neighbor was about fifty yards away... I think this is where were going for mem. day.

x2 on the drinking...as long as you aren't loud then it doesn't really matter if you are wasted.

Prince gallitzins nice but the campgrounds there are probably not what your lookin for, geared more towards the kids and city slickers. You can drink there, but you can also get thrown out for it, twice in one night. Ask me how i know.

Scarlet knob right outside ohiopyle. We'll be there memorial day weekend. Drinkin' and wheelin', although not in that order. Not much to the trails, 'cept a good time. If you decide to go there look for the campsite with a bunch of lifted Jeeps and Yota's, Can't miss us. (oh and we're gonna have a band this year.)

We don't have that problem, we camp in the back and don't get any traffic from anyone else.

What about the Cove Campground down at Gore, VA. It's where they have Big Dogs. The place is awesome. Big lake, little beach, shooting range, etc.

Might I suggest Greenridge State Forest in MD. It's a few miles away, but it's primitive, it's right a long the North Patomic, it's got a ton of hiking trails and there is even a OHV trail.

I have no idea how crowded it will get over the holiday, but the sites are pretty far apart.

It is primitive camping though, no water, no showers and no toilet (bring the shovel).
