Looks clean but isn't 6500 high for the buy it now on a TJ with that many miles?
Wow, you got the bug BAD at the show yesterday, haha.
I know of a guy at work with a clean 99 Cherokee sport red, around the same mileage, a little less I think. 4.0... all service records, private owner, 4K. Was not used as an off-roader. Just back and forth to U.S. Steel everyday and that's it. Can get you the number if you want.
I have to agree with Matt also.
I offered 5000.00 and he counterd for 6200. I would not go more than 5800. I have some time before the offer runs out to counter. I found another that I has more miles but but high bis is a lot lower and I am winning even less at. That ends later today. I will only buy if it is right. Not in that big of a hurry to spend too much. I think that I want to stay with a TJ. Full frame, no leafs, and I think the kids will enjoy the open top feel. That and the wife wants a ''real Jeep"

The 97 Sports have the 4.0, but still have the Dana 35 rears. If you go 99+ the Sports have the Dana 44 rears. The 98's are mixed if I remember correctly. If you find a Jeep with the big wheel & tire package (OEM Gamblers, Canyons & 30" tires) it will most likely have the D44.
Look around. You can find what you are looking for in that price range.

Agreed!! just look, look, look, and look some more. The right one will pop up; and you'll know it when you find it. Walking away from a buy and later knowing you made the right move(walking away) feels damn good. Then finding the one that is right for you; then looking back on the ones you passed up; feels even better.
Plus that ones white!!
Go silver; hides scratches!! Don't go black; I made that mistake and my truck looks like a 2 year old went to town on it with a pack of silver crayons....
Good luck!!
the price seems a little high. When i bought mine in 2005 (its a 97) i paid 4,000. and it had 33 inch bfgs, aftermarket wheels, wider flares, and a bestop sailcloth top, and a shitty body lift (which got taken off and i put a suspension lift on) Mine had about 147,xxx miles on it also, maybe i just got a good deal or maybe the price on the one you are looking at is high,
98 xj- project dad's baby hauler-3 inch skyjacker lift 31 inch at's custom bumper
00 xj- opposite sex-j or wife-j
97 tj-summer fun toy. 33's 4 inch lift custom tube fenders, custom armor and stuff.

I don't know the details, but I know the d44 was an OPTION on the 97 TJ's (Karstman's.) Came with drums, but very easy to convert to discs.
It has nothing to do with Sport or non-Sport. 2000 and newer with the 30" tire and wheel package (Canyon rims) will get you a D44. Prior to that, including 99's, even with the 30" tire and wheel package, it was a crapshoot. As Matt said, the TJ 44's are easy to convert to disc's now though, thanks to the Rubicon.
< 99 TJ w/ 30" tire and wheel package w/ (now former) D35.

I have an 00 sport , that came with the 30 inch tires and canyons, no 44
Factory Dana 44s
- Jeepster Commando: Dana 44 rear axle on all Jeepster Commandos, 67-69 had tapered axle Dana 44 and the 70-71 had the flanged Dana 44 axles.
- YJ Wrangler: Some early YJs also had a Dana 44 in the rear, but this option was only available in Canada.
- TJ Wrangler:1997-2006 Rear 3.73 ratio Dana 44 optional on Sport and Sahara models, also standard on X model Rocky Mountain Edition. 2003-2006 Rubicons also come with 44's front and rear, and the rear Dana 44 has been an option for TJ's for quite some time.
The rear Dana 44 is optional with other 4x4 models.
- JK Wrangler: 2007 and up Rubicon models include HD HP Dana 44 Front and HD Dana 44 Rear with 32 splines (upgraded from TJ Rubicons).
- XJ Cherokee/Wagoneer: 1987-1989 (some say up until 1990) XJ Cherokees with the Tow Package sometimes came with the Dana 44 rear axle. These are now hard to come by because of Wrangler and Cherokee owners using them to upgrade their weak Dana 35s and because it's an easy bolt-in swap for Cherokees and Wranglers.
- MJ Comanche: 1987-1990 (some say up until 1992) MJ Comanches with the "Metric Ton" Package(long bed only) came with a Dana 44. It was also avaible as an option on short beds and lomg bed without the "Metric Ton" package.
years, and either the Dana 44 or AMC 20 axle in the rear. These are also prime candidates for swaps into smaller Jeeps.
- SJ Wagoneer: Jeep Wagoneers (SJs) came with Dana 44's as the front axle for most
- ZJ Grand Cherokee: 1996-1998 ZJs with the V8 and 1999-2004 WJs with the V8 had a Dana 44 with an aluminum centersection.

The shifter and body lift will need to go. Just need to get up there and pick it up.

If you are going to ditch the 2" body lift you may as well replace it with the 1" now. Trust me you are probably going to end up with one anyway.

That was my fault, that should have been 2001.
From what I understand, starting in 2001, along with the other changes in that model year (light's on the stalk instead of the dash, sailcloth, etc), that's when the D44 became standard equipment with the 30" tire and wheel package.

My friend bought an new, off the lot, 03 with the 30" W&T package. D35. When I bought my 03, the 30" W&T package did NOT have the upgraded axle as standard. I paid extra for the D44.
Buying used is a crapshoot. It's pretty darn easy to put on new wheels and tires. ALWAYS check.
