I've got one for a 72-75 in decent shape. It only needs minor work. $10
It's not illegal, it's frowned upon.
Got one from a 78. Been sand blasted, couple small repairs, and painted. Comes with springs and axles (30 & 20)
$100
PMs sent. The other deal is a good deal, and if I didnt already have a glass tub, fenders and hood sitting here I would be all over it.
Can someone help me out, what is the differences between say the 72, 78, and 80 CJ5 frames? I was thinking that I could use anything from 71 up, am I wrong?
75 and back and 76-81 are the splits, the running gear on the 76-81 are the same as the 76-86 cj's so every thing interchanges, 75 was the last year for a D44 rear till the last year for a CJ in 86 and then it was only offered half the year in the CJ-7.

That's only partially true. The tubs are basically split that way, but the frames are not. The 71 and older have a shorter frame, different steering style, etc. The 72-newer CJ5s all have the same length... A 72-75 CJ5 frame is the same length as a 76 newer but has some other differences. If you aren't going for original restoration, it isn't a big deal if you can deal with some minor changes.

it does depend on what year of cj that you are trying to work on.
if you get a 76 and later you will have to change your axle spring perches location on the rear (if you are trying to build a pre 76 cj)
also the frames on the 76 and later are boxed frames from the factory, and they were designed with wider spring mounts.
with a little work you can make any of them work for any year tub, you would just have to modify some tub mount locations, and spring perches.
If you are not opposed to doing that, then I would suggest a frame after 76... they were just built better from the factory.
I have 3 of the darn things sitting in my jeep parts section (built new custom frames for each jeep), but sadly the cost of transportation would be just crazy.....
