I cut some holes in my hood :)

    Fun stuff. Here's a small write-up:

We started off by removing the hood. I wasn't gonna be reaching over and cutting uneven lines so i took it off. Then we use masking tape to tape over the area to be cut to minimize the paint damage.

Out came the cutting wheel, sparks went flying, and i ended up with a big hole:

Dang cut off wheel cracked so i switched to another used disc cuz that's all i had:

    Now i got two holes:

Here's some vids of me cutting:

7" cut off wheel...didn't work so well:

After the cutting was done, i asked my gf to put the vents in, hoping they fit right and i didn't have to cry for overcutting. They fit perfect:

After that it was painting up the cuts so my hood isn't a big chunk of rust tomorrow:

At last, the little baby stainless steel screws were inserted into the freshly drilled holes:

    All Done:

I used silicone sealant on the inner side of the vent lip to seal it up. Didn't really need it but used it anyways. I almost installed one vent in backwards but luckily caught myself before installing it. :brickwall:

My girl and i put the hood back on and went out to eat somewhere. I stopped at a stop sign and was staring at a bumper of a car in front of me and for a second it felt like i was hallucinating or something because my vision became blurry and wavy but then realized it was the heat wave coming out of the vents. I guess they work

So what's next? I take it that you did this to let the heat out from under the hood right? You gonna put some louvers on it?

No need for louvers. These work well enough. I do alot of slow crawling out in the woods so i'm just preparing the rig for that kind of wheeling. I know the cherokee engine bays are cramped and tend to heat up real good so hopefully this helps some.

What's next? Roof rack, then backbone system and finally a winch. I already have 3 skids, lift, tires, hitch, sye, and some other junk on it. I haven't even been off road yet I'm taking my experience with the tj and preparing the xj so it's built once and built right.

Oh...i guess i got confused on your first post Sorry

Yeah louvers weren't the word I was looking for. It's what you went ahead and installed that I ment. It looks really good. I have a Safari Rack on my Jeep but so far it has been for show. I intend to put my spare up in it once I find a rim and buy one, would like to put some lights up on it and stick my highlight jack in it. These mounting brackets are damn expensive (I think) thorugh 4wd Hardware. I think bungy sraps would work nicely.

As far as dumping much more money into my Cherokee suspension wise, I might wait and buy another Cherokee 1st. My 92 has some floor rot starting and some other rust issues elsewhere. My brother-in-law showed me some popular places that like to rust and he suggested that I might want to start over again with another Cherokee, maybe something newer. I don't have the money though, so who knows. It works for now.

I was considering that rack but i have a $20 off coupon for summit racing and planning to get the surco rack. It's a good one, so i've heard. I also go through 4wd hardware for parts but sometimes summit just has the better deals.
I would refrain from using bungies to hold the tire. That wouldn't be too safe in an accident. The tire could become a frisbee.

A big 31inch frisbee. A ratchet strap would work better then.

I have the Surco rack. It's not the full roof one. I thought they were made by Safari? I bought it used on Craigslist a few months back. $50 bucks or something like that. I'll have to pick up a Summit Catalog and thumb through it. It;s been awhile since I looked through one.

How big? enough for the 31 incher? I just want the surco that's big enough for my 31" tire to get it out of the rear so i have more cargo space. I also love the looks of lifted cherokees with roof racks and spare up there. It's sweeeeeet.

Definetly big enough for a 31X10.50 and a couple other things. It's a 4X6, 4X8? It takes up about half of the roof, I know that. Your Jeep has 31s? It looks alot bigger than mine.

Correct me if I'm wrong but they look like bilge vents from a boat. I am looking for a set myself to do this to the TJ. They are fairly cheap 15-30ish depending on size and shape. I am looking for these slanted ones if anyone sees them let me know

Btw the Jeep looks good I like it. I like the blackout theme

My jeep's an illusion. To me and some others they are 37" mud terrains but in reality, they are 31's

    The vents are......well....boat vents

    http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...classNum=12408

I picked these because they openings are huge to allow alot of air flow. I'm wondering how they will hold up since they are abs plastic but considering their price, i won't worry too much. I can grab another set or four as backup It's pretty neat to sit at idle and see a heat wave coming out....

    thanks for the comments

I've seen those on ebay but the ones i saw had curved corners. I can't seem to find them now.

These ones came off a boat heading to the crusher so the guy didn't know make or model. I have been searching on and off for awhile for them. My electric taurus fan does an ok job but has the occasional glitch where it doesn't start when I start the Jeep so I figure a set of these would be a good back up /just incase and they look cool. If anyone happens to see a set that looks close and wouldn't mind shooting me a Pm I would appriciate it.

Looks good. I have the same vents. Well, mine come to more of a V shape than those. They're boat vents.
    Good job.
