The "Terrible Towel": Suzuki Samurai Coil Conversion

2011 EDIT! - I don't know why the link pics changed and won't show, but you can view them all at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...0&l=4dc64f8927 – highlights are below.

Here's one I just took, a few years later I'm back at it, finally.

I'm a wuss, and the Samurai just rides too rough on and off road... Which lead to a severely overboard conversion: replace the leaf spring suspension with a fully coil sprung long arm suspension, over the knuckle steering, etc. Big project, will update as stuff is completed.
All pics on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...0&l=4dc64f8927 – highlights are below.

This is a Rocky Road Outfitters kit. Do not buy from them. Period, end of story.

This is a work in progress…
Never buy from Rocky Road Outfitters, beyond their shady practices and slow shipping (and outright lies at times) - there is NO reason for a long arm kit to ship with the johny joints in pieces. Not everyone has an installation tool or 20 ton press.

Another reason not to order for them, at the cost of this kit, there is no reason for them to be using manufacturing processes which leave holes this freakin' out of round. That's pathetic.

    Cutting old stuff off:

Rear truss welded on, Steve makes my welds look like buggers, and mine aren't bad!

This rig has definitely been jumped (even before I got it) -the kit (STUPIDLY) uses the old bump stop mount as a place for the coil to mount. It's crushed in and collapsing, so it's being cut off and replaced.

The view from my home office

Steve's new coil mounts to replace the crappy bumpstop style mounts: these are actually built out of an old style Claytons Off-Road upper control arm (1.5" box, 1/4" wall.)

I like the progress so far, the kit looks like a complete piece of shit, especially because it looks like you could have built one as quickly, but all in all looks good. I'll be out this weekend to help out with whatever you need.

You need to have him lean out the passenger door if you want to hit reverse without nailing him in the nuts!

SirFuego, I don't think you and I would fit in this thing. Matt and I barely fit and I look like I'm riding in a shriner's car.

Hence why I made the comment. I'm sure it would be entertaining for everyone. Would the engine be strong enough to even move the Sami?

    Looks sweet Matt!

though I simply can't stop myself from saying that Toy axles would have made all that work complete & done for good

Either way, gotta be a huge improvement

Rolling the Sammi might be kind of scary, I don't think it has any form of cage.

It has a hoop right behind the front seats, but not much beyond that.

I'd be up for a cage but I gave my 2 and a half sticks of tube to a couple of crazy bastards to build the punisher

Jokes aside, I really want to build an internal cage, nothing to really "save" the rig in a real rollover, but something to save my neck!

im not bashing the bfg's. i'm just partial to the LTB on the sami for some reason and they seem to be the popular combo. maybe some day i will get mine back together and we can make a trip to the zookimelt.

I've heard nothing but good things about them, and would like something smaller than 35's on this rig, they just fell into place (right time / price when I needed them.)

Because this project went overboard enough alrady, and I intend to keep (make) it relatively street legal... have the bugy for the throttle happy wheeling.

Might put alloys in the front, half price right now...
