How to fit 14 inch 5150s on a 4runner (hydro bender build)

JD2 model 3 bender from Trick Tools $300

OTC 14 inch spring return ram from Florida Hydraulics $200
(This is the ram that comes with the JD2 hydro conversion)

JD2 ram mount from Trick Tools $90

Used hydraulic power unit from a 9k auto lift from Jake the Carney $50
(has motor, pump, resevoir, valve block all in one unit)

Hose with quick disconnect from Myzak Hydraulic in Canonsburg $62

Grounded plug for power unit $7

1 3/4 die borrowed from Cebby but I will buy one, eventually.

I wanted a bender similar to the Model 3 with the hydro kit which costs $1614.00 plus the price of the bender but I did not want to spend a total of $2000 with shipping/tax/etc and still not have any dies.

    http://www.vansantent.com/model_3_bender.htm

So I sourced the parts my self and MF Steve and I put it together in about an hour. We have it working and will use it to build its own stand which will include a mounted laptop for Bendtech.

I think we're probably best off mounting in the horizontal plane. I just read a few threads on other forums about people having issues with bending main hoops, etc. with their benders in the vertical position.

Kids? It isn't rocket science. Specialty tube bending software helps too. There won't be any waste here. Plenty of experience, just a new machine, not a loaner this time.

After rewiring it for 110v, it works great. It is a little too fast so I will put a restricter in the line somewhere.

We had a piece of 1.75 .120 dom wall break while bending today. It was not binding and it broke all the way around, leaving a knife-like edge around the break. It did not hurt the bender or dies. Anyone witnessed a similar occurrence?

I figured I'd give my truck some time to warm up being that it's 4* outside. So, I went out and started it, came back in and welded everything up. I might go down tomorrow depending on how fawkin cold it is (I don't wanna wait for it to warm up in there,) and finish up the pump mount, maybe a 4 gang electric box and some wheels/casters. Ryan has the pix.

No - but how cold was the tube? I'll bet that had something to do with it.

Thats about all we could come up with. It is pretty wild...the pictures will show. It's almost an even break all the way around the circumference of the tube. Where it split, the edge is almost like a male and female beveled edge.

Oddly enough, there was no damage to the tube before the bend, and no visible damage other than the break afterwards. Although, after that, we gave another bend a shot, which came out great, and one more of the same following that. No problem at all, and all the parts were manufactured from the same length of tubing. Weird...

Yeah, I was afraid we had made a tubing breaker instead of a tubing bender. The tube was really cold and before we figured out that the power unit was wired internally for 220 but we had a 110 plug on it, we were bending it a little bit and letting it pop back. I think it was fatigue plus cold plus a relatively tight bend. Either way, it worked fine after that.
