I am looking for a SM 465 ... Can you use a 2WD trans or are the splines different for a 4WD ?

only if you use a divorced transfer case. Otherwise you will have to find the adapter housing on the back of the transmission that bolts to a transfer case. finding one of those will be harder than just finding a good 465 trans.
