    Thinking of buying a Jeep

I am looking for a new DD and am looking at a few jeeps. I dont know much about them and thought this would be the best place to ask what to look for.
Heres what Im thinking of buying, it is a 2004 Wrangler X with a 4.0 and a 5 spd. and about 37k on it.
I was wondering what the comon problems with these jeeps are?

Well Wranglers are for high school cheerleaders, so you should really be looking at Cherokees. Real man jeeps.

an X will have a Dana 35 rear end. if you're going to lift it and go bigger than 35's, expect to change that.

    if it's a 5 spd it has a NV3550, decent trans.

look for any pinion leaks, wet spots underneath, etc

Really there's not much to em to go bad... especially one that new.

The way I figure it doesn't matter what condition its in. Your gonna end up replacing most of the parts anyway. Even if its "just a daily driver". Once you get the bug, it doesn't go away.

Keith, make sure you're willing to deal with crappy fuel mileage before you make a purchase. Too many people cry about 14-20 mpg's after they buy. No offense Jpdst29, and I wasn't trying to p!ss you off by my comment in your fuel mileage discussion, just hackin' on ya.

Also keep in mind what kind of wheelin' you think you'd like to get into in the future. If you want to play on rocks more then lean toward an Auto trans. You say DD now, but you'll get an addiction just like the rest of us. Our Jeeps are our 'crack'. Just like you're doing now, keep reading and researching before you spend a dime. If I could have afforded it at the time, I would have gotten a Rubicon just to have those lockers.

If you don't get a Rubi, try to find a Jeep with a D44 in the rear if you plan on lifting and going with bigger tires.

What outher models come with a D44? I would love a Rubi but, I cant afford one. Im not realy concerned with fuel mileage it isnt any worse than the truck I have now.

TJ Wrangler:1997-2006 Rear 3.73 ratio Dana 44 optional on Sport and Sahara models, also standard on X model Rocky Mountain Edition.
