    xxx Josh's 07 Ninja 650R xxx

I would think this falls under "reader's rides" and "build threads". Maybe some of you with bikes will enjoy going through this...

On July 25th, 2008, I rolled my first street bike out of a Suzuki dealership. It was a Kawasaki. I got my 07 Plasma Blue 650R with 370 miles on it for $5400. I'm 20 years old a college student at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY but I'm originally from Ligonier, PA and I love riding around in the hills of southern PA and West Virginia. I put 3000 miles on my bike since I bought it (3 or 4 months of riding).

This thread will follow my bike modifications. I love to work on things and tinker or modify so I can never leave anything alone. I have to make it unique and my own.

    Now for some catching up.

    Brand newish 7/08...

Started making the bike my own...

    -Tank Pad

-Dark blue wheel stickers from ebay for $6.

-Shogun Swingarm Spool Sliders from ebay for $20.

    -R&G No-Cut Frame Sliders from ninja650shop.com for $130.

-Welded up a nice rear stand and painted it blue with some wheel paint from Walmart.

-Changed oil and cleaned air filter. Used Kawasaki filter and oil.

-Removed air box baffles and sub-throttle plates. This definitely made the throttle more responsive.

Picture from when I was installing the frame sliders and removing the air box baffles and sub-throttle plates...

Not much longer after I put on the sliders they were needed when I flipped my bike. Read about that here- http://www.kawiforums.com/showthread.php?t=123663

So now I really like the streetfighter look of my bike and I'm going to keep it this way.

I broke a factory footpeg so I went to bikebandit.com and got a pair of Emgo blue foot pegs for $30 for a ZX6. I got them to fit with a little grinding on the pegs and some customizing.

I got tired of the factory fender pretty quick so I went to the local bike shop and for $40 I got a Targa fender eliminator bracket and a pair of K&S clear lens (amber bulb) turn signals. Attached it with a single bolt through the tail underside and covered two holes with some electrical tape.

Since the bike is in my apartment at school now for winter I've been doing some painting. First the coolant bottle became black with some Krylon Fusion Black from Walmart. This is the only picture I have since the bike is stuck in the dining area of the apartment.

I also did some touch-up work with paint from bikecolours.com (via ebay). Read the review here- http://www.kawiforums.com/showthread...80#post1521780

Stay tuned for re-covering the seat and mounting the front turn signals.

I guess I should mention what gear I wear.

Helmet - HJC CS-R1 Flare Helmet in blue.

Jacket - Teknic Diablo Textile Jacket in a sick blue that matches the bike really well. motorcyclesuperstore.com

Gloves - Teknic SMT Gloves. motorcyclesuperstore.com

I usually just wear jeans and Lugz boots but riding pants and boots are in the future. I also have a full length red Aero jacket for long/cold rides and when it gets ugly out I ride with Carhartt jacket, pants/bibs, and gloves.

I couldn't stop laughing the day my 4 yo said "Look it's the blue Power Ranger!" about the guy on the sport bike in full gear.

The day you passed your test I told you that you would wreck it, I was right! Hope you didn't get too busted up.

haha thanks tom! ya, I was fine. I was practicing stopies and it rolled forward a little too much. I pretty much just stepped off and let it fall over, so I stayed on my feet somehow. everyone that watched was like wtf...?

Great call on including your protection as a part of your build. I consider all of my armor a part of me and my bike.

I've been giving some thought to picking up a Ninja 250 or 650 for a track day bike. I'm honestly leaning towards that 250 because of the weight. They are great bikes to flick around a track.

Regarding boots, I high-sided two years ago and was wearing some Docs at the time. After that wreck I switched to full motorcycle boots. I ground the eyelets of the Docs flush with the leather and had a bruised foot for a while. One thing you don't think of until you wreck when it comes to boots. If the laces get ripped apart, you will have a peach of a time pushing your bike to the side of the road with a boot falling off. This is why I have zippers and velcro on my boots now.
