    Little upgrade to the 9er

Been meaning to get around to this for a while. Each time I ride, I bash he hell out of my top ring gear, and I hardly ever use it. So I decided to swap it out for a bash guard. Easy install, simply remove the 4 bolts holding the gear set together, slide off the top ring gear and slide the new bash guard on. Retighten bolts and call it done!

Don't forget to adj your upper limit screw. On some derailuers, if you tighten it so it perfectly locks out the larger gear, somehow the screw also hits something and locks out the lower gear, so you have to keep it backed off just slightly. But I think that is only on top swing derauiluers, so you should be ok on yours.

well originally i did it just to try 1x9. Then when i put the new LX cranks on it I left it on because it's actually useful. We ended up at the bottom of the wide cinder road by the sand pits in NP. My legs were toast and i was still able to drop the chain down to the granny. I had planned on ditching it when i put my new crank on, but i just left it.

Is the granny ring the ring over the gears by the peddles (I don't know shit about bikes.) - only that my old Raleigh put a gear through my leg when I was 13 because I didn't have a ring like that, that was a really fun hospital trip when they shot the water in there before stitching it!

No, the granny ring is the little ring on the inside, only grandmothers use it.

Actually you have to be pretty strong to ride without a granny ring. If I did not have one I'd probably end up walking now and again.
